Abstract

Disclosed are various embodiments of voltage protectors that include a first voltage clamping device configured to clamp a voltage of an input power applied to an electrical load, and a second voltage clamping device configured to clamp the voltage applied to the electrical load. A series inductance separates the first and second voltage clamping devices. Also, a switching element is employed to selectively establish a direct coupling of the input power to the electrical load, where a circuit is employed to control the operation of the switching element.

Claims

1. A voltage surge and overvoltage protection system, comprising:

at least one selectively disconnectable protection circuit component for providing protection to an electrical load from an overvoltage occurring on an input power voltage;

a switching element employed to selectively disconnect the protection component;

a memory for storing a plurality of predefined voltage-time curves corresponding to a plurality of predetermined voltage-time thresholds; and

a switch control circuit that controls the operation of the switching element to disconnect the protection circuit component from the input power voltage in response to detection that a duration and magnitude of the input power voltage exceeds one of the predetermined voltage-time thresholds represented by one of the plurality of voltage-time curves stored in the memory.

The system of claim 1, further comprising at least one first voltage clamping device configured to clamp a voltage of the input power voltage to a predetermined first voltage clamping level, and wherein the disconnectable protection circuit component comprises at least one second voltage clamping device configured to clamp a voltage of the input power voltage to a predetermined second voltage clamping level.

3. The system of claim 2, wherein the voltage clamping devices comprise a metal-oxide varistor.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the switching element comprises a relay.

5. The system of claim 2, wherein a clamping voltage of the at least one first voltage clamping device is substantially higher as a clamping voltage of the at least one second voltage clamping device.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the switching element further comprises:

a first state in which the switching element establishes a direct coupling of the input power to the electrical load; and

a second state in which the direct coupling is opened.

7. The system of claim 6, further comprising a series impedance coupled in parallel with the switching element, where the switching element presents a path of least resistance that bypasses the series impedance when the switching element is in the first state.

8. The system of claim 6, where the switching element further couples a shunt resistance across the electrical load in the second state.

9. The system of claim 6, further comprising an impedance switching element configured to add an impedance to the electrical load, where the switch control circuit further controls the operation of the impedance switching element.

10. The system of claim 9, where the switching element is in parallel with the impedance switching element, where the impedance is configured to minimize a voltage across the switching element when added to the electrical load;

and

the switch control circuit is configured to sequence a manipulation of the switching element and the impedance switching element in order to open the direct coupling so as to minimize a potential for physical damage to the switching element due to sparking.

20. The system of claim 2, further comprising an inductance coupled after the first voltage clamping device but prior to the second voltage clamping device.

21. The system of claim 7, wherein the series impedance comprises a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) resistor.

22. The system of claim 1, wherein the switch control circuit comprises a microprocessor and a voltage detection interface circuit.

The system of claim 22, wherein the switch control circuit is operative to compare voltage values received from the voltage detection interface circuit over time to the voltage-time curves stored in the memory, and control actuation of the switching element to provide protection for the electrical load and for other components in the system.

The system of claim 1, wherein the memory stores a voltage-time curve corresponding to at least one moderate overvoltage condition and to a severe overvoltage condition, and wherein the switch control circuit provides a corresponding actuation sequence for the switch control circuit for the at least one moderate overvoltage condition and for the severe overvoltage condition.

25. The system of claim 1, wherein the memory stores a plurality of voltage-time curves corresponding to a plurality of moderate overvoltage conditions, and wherein the switch control circuit provides a corresponding actuation sequence for the switch control circuit.

26. The system of claim 1, wherein the voltage represented in the predefined voltage-time curves comprises an RMS voltage value.

27. The system of claim 26, wherein an input power voltage that is less than 15% in excess of the nominal value of 120 volts RMS is considered safe.

28. The system of claim 26, wherein an input power voltage that exceeds 115% of the nominal voltage of 120 volts RMS for a predefined period of time results in the disconnection by the switch control circuit of the protection circuit component.

11. A method for providing voltage surge and overvoltage protection to an electrical load, comprising the steps of:

applying an input power voltage to the electrical load;

providing at least one selectively disconnectable protection circuit component for providing protection to the electrical load from an overvoltage occurring on the input power voltage;

storing a plurality of predefined voltage-time curves corresponding to a plurality of predetermined voltage-time thresholds in a memory;

detecting a magnitude and duration of the input power voltage; and

disconnecting the protection circuit component from the input power voltage in response to detection that the magnitude and a duration of an overvoltage are greater than at least one predefined voltage-time thresholds stored in the memory.

The method of claim 11, wherein the step of disconnecting the protection circuit component comprises the step of switching an isolation relay from a first state to a second state to disconnect the protection circuit component, where the relay couples the input power voltage directly to the electrical load in the first state, and the relay disconnects the protection circuit component and imposes a shunt resistance across the electrical load in the second state.

13. The method of claim 12, further comprising the step of completely isolating the electrical load from the input power when the isolation relay is in the second state.

14. The method of claim 12, where the electrical load is partially isolated from the input power when the isolation relay is in the second state, where the isolation relay is coupled in parallel to an impedance.

15. The method of claim 11, further comprising the step of adding an impedance to the electrical load when the power voltage experiences a voltage sag during a steady-state operation of the electrical load.

16. The method of claim 15, further comprising the step of removing the impedance from the electrical load when the power voltage has reached a predefined point in the power voltage cycle after the power voltage has returned to a nominal state.

The method of claim 11, wherein the input power voltage is directly coupled to the electrical load during normal voltage conditions, and further comprising the step of disconnecting the direct coupling of the input power voltage to the electrical load in response to detection of an overvoltage condition corresponding to exceeding one of the voltage-time thresholds stored in the memory.

The method of claim 11, wherein the protection circuit component comprises at least one first voltage clamping device and at least one second voltage clamping device separated by a series inductance, and wherein the step of disconnecting the protection circuit component comprises disconnecting the second voltage clamping device.

31. The method of claim 30, wherein the first and second voltage clamping devices comprise a metal-oxide varistor.

32. The method of claim 30, wherein a clamping voltage of the at least one first voltage clamping device is substantially higher as a clamping voltage of the at least one second voltage clamping device.

33. The method of claim 15, wherein the impedance comprises a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) resistor.

34. The method of claim 15, wherein the step of disconnecting the protection circuit component from the input power voltage is effected by a switch, wherein the impedance is configured to minimize a voltage across the switch when added to the electrical load;

and

further comprising the step of manipulating the switch in order to open a direct coupling so as to minimize a potential for physical damage to the switching due to sparking.

17. A system for conditioning an input power voltage applied to an electrical load, comprising:

means for distributing a dissipation of an overvoltage experienced in the power voltage among a first parallel clamping device and a second parallel clamping device;

means for storing a plurality of predefined voltage-time curves corresponding to a plurality of predetermined voltage-time thresholds;

means for disconnecting the second parallel clamping circuit from the input power voltage in response to detection that a duration and magnitude of the input power voltage exceeds one of the predetermined voltage-time thresholds represented by one of the plurality of voltage-time curves stored in the memory; and

means for disconnecting a direct coupling of the input power voltage from the electrical load in response to detection that a magnitude and a duration of an overvoltage are greater than at least one predefined voltage-time threshold stored in the memory.

18. The system of claim 17, further comprising means for adding an impedance to the electrical load when the power voltage experiences a voltage sag during a steady-state operation of the electrical load.

19. The system of claim 18, further comprising means for removing the impedance from the electrical load when the power voltage has reached a predefined point in the power voltage cycle after the power voltage has returned to a nominal state.
