1. A method of determining contact between a tip of a lancet and target tissue of a patient comprising:

  • (a) determining relative position and velocity of the lancet based on measuring relative position of the lancet with respect to time;

    (b) measuring a magnitude of deceleration of the lancet during at least a portion of the inward cutting stroke of the lancing cycle and comparing the magnitude of the measured deceleration to a deceleration threshold, wherein the deceleration threshold has been determined for contact between a lancet tip and a target tissue; and

    (c) determining contact if the magnitude of the measured deceleration is sufficiently greater than the deceleration threshold;

    wherein the deceleration threshold is determined by the deceleration of the lancet due to intrinsic frictional forces of the lancing device alone.
