1. Apparatus, comprising:

  • a substrate having a surface with a deterministic, aperiodic nano-scale pattern, the pattern extending across an area to be covered by an analyte whose presence is to be detected during use of the apparatus, the pattern exhibiting deterministic aperiodicity and corresponding dense filling of reciprocal space across the entirety of the area;

    a source of light directed at the surface of the substrate;

    a detector operative to receive a pattern of light scattered off the surface of the substrate and to convert the received pattern of light to a corresponding color image, the color image having a colorimetric spatial distribution pattern; and

    image processing circuitry operative to perform pattern recognition on the colorimetric spatial distribution pattern to detect the presence of the analyte on the surface of the substrate.
