Abstract

Tissue ablation systems and methods are provided. Ablation energy (e.g., radio frequency energy) is delivered to the tissue and a physiological parameter (e.g., impedance and/or temperature) indicative of a change in moisture concentration of the tissue is sensed. The ablation energy is alternately pulsed on and off to generate an energy pulse train, with the ablation energy being pulsed on if the sensed physiological parameter crosses a threshold value indicative of an increase in the moisture concentration, and being pulsed off if the sensed physiological parameter crosses a threshold value indicative of a decrease in the moisture concentration.

Claims

1. An ablation energy generator comprising:

an energy source for outputting ablation energy via an ablation probe;

control circuitry comprising a RF oscillator operatively coupled to a pulse modulator and an amplitude modulator, the pulse modulator and the amplitude modulator operatively coupled to a controller;

a physiological sensor comprising one of an impedance sensor and a temperature sensor carried by the ablation probe, the physiological sensor operatively coupled to the controller;

wherein the control circuitry is configured to deliver a first plurality of ablation pulses, each pulse in the first plurality of ablation pulses having an equal amplitude and progressively smaller pulse width, followed by a second plurality of ablation pulses, each pulse in the second plurality of ablation pulses having an equal amplitude that is lower than the amplitude of the first plurality of ablation pulses and progressively smaller pulse width; and

wherein the duration of each pulse of the first and second plurality of ablation pulses is based on threshold values contained in the controller.

2. The ablation energy generator of claim 1, wherein the second plurality of ablation pulses is delivered when a pulse of the first plurality of ablation pulses has a pulse width of one second or less.

The ablation energy generator of claim 1, wherein the control circuitry is further configured to deliver a third plurality of ablation pulses, each pulse in the third plurality of ablation pulses having an equal amplitude that is lower than the amplitude of the second plurality of ablation pulses and progressively smaller pulse width.

4. The ablation energy generator of claim 1, wherein the threshold values are different for the first plurality of ablation pulses and the second plurality of ablation pulses.

5. The ablation energy generator of claim 4, wherein the threshold values are determined relative to a prior threshold value.

6. The ablation energy generator of claim 1, wherein the threshold values for the second plurality of ablation pulses are greater than the threshold values for the first plurality of ablation pulses.

7. The ablation energy generator of claim 1, wherein the control circuitry is further configured to deliver an increased amplitude of energy greater than the energy of the second plurality of ablation pulses for a predetermined period of time.

8. The ablation energy generator of claim 7, wherein the increased amplitude of energy is delivered after the amplitude level and width of one of the plurality of ablation pulses are each reduced below a threshold value.

9. The ablation energy generator of claims 1, wherein the energy source is a radio frequency (RF) energy source.

10. The ablation energy generator of claim 1, wherein the threshold values comprise temperature values in the range between 50°

C. to 70°

C.

11. A method of treating tissue within a patient comprising:

introducing an ablation probe percutaneously into tissue;

deploying an electrode array form the ablation probe;

delivering a first plurality of ablation pulses to the tissue from the electrode array, each pulse in the first plurality of ablation pulses having an equal amplitude and progressively smaller pulse width, followed by a second plurality of ablation pulses, each pulse in the second plurality of ablation pulses having an equal amplitude that is lower than the amplitude of the first plurality of ablation pulses and progressively smaller pulse width; and

wherein the duration of each pulse of the first and second plurality of ablation pulses is based on threshold values.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the second plurality of ablation pulses is delivered when a pulse of the first plurality of ablation pulses has a pulse width of one second or less.

13. The method of claim 11, further comprising delivering a third plurality of ablation pulses, each pulse in the third plurality of ablation pulses having an equal amplitude that is lower than the amplitude of the second plurality of ablation pulses and progressively smaller pulse width.

14. The method of claim 11, wherein the threshold values are different for the first plurality of ablation pulses and the second plurality of ablation pulses.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the threshold values are determined relative to a prior threshold value.

16. The method of claim 11, wherein the threshold values for the second plurality of ablation pulses are greater than the threshold values for the first plurality of ablation pulses.

17. The method of claim 11, further comprising delivering an increased amplitude of energy greater than the energy of the second plurality of ablation pulses for a predetermined period of time.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the increased amplitude of energy is delivered after the amplitude level and width of one of the plurality of ablation pulses are each reduced below a threshold value.

19. The method of claim 11, wherein the energy source is a radio frequency (RF) energy source.

20. The method claim 11, wherein the threshold values comprise temperature values in the range between 50°
