1. An appliance controller for controlling an appliance, the controller comprising:

  • a memory in communication with a processor, the memory including program instructions for execution by the processor to;

    receive demand response settings from the appliance, the demand response settings comprising demand response threshold variables for determining a reaction of the appliance in response to reaching one or more of the demand response threshold variables;

    receive a signal from an associated utility indicative of at least one of the demand response threshold variables, the controller being in signal communication with the associated utility;

    convert and compare the signal from the associated utility to the demand response threshold variables; and

    control an operation of the appliance in one or more power consuming functions based on the comparison of the signal from the associated utility to the demand response threshold variable, wherein the one or more power consuming functions comprise cycle selections comprising a reduced energy consumption mode to one or more energy cycles.
