1. A method for selecting a display source light illumination level for a current frame, said method comprising:
- a) determining a plurality of error vectors wherein each error vector corresponds to one of a plurality of display source light illumination levels and wherein said error vectors each represent deviations in display luminance from input image luminance at a corresponding source light illumination level, and are determined only for each of said plurality of display source light illumination levels within a defined subset of display source light illumination levels centered around the display source light illumination level selected during a frame preceding said current frame;
b) generating an image histogram for an image to be displayed;
c) pre-computing error vector values off-line and storing the error vector values in memory for subsequent application to an image;
d) weighting said error vector values using histogram bin values from said image histogram thereby creating histogram-weighted error values corresponding to said source light illumination levels; and
e) selecting a source light illumination level for said image wherein said selecting is based on said histogram-weighted error values.
