1. An electrosurgical return electrode, comprising:

  • a conductive pad including a patient-contacting surface configured to conduct electrosurgical energy; and

a temperature sensing circuit coupled to the conductive pad, the temperature sensing circuit including a plurality of switching elements electrically connected in series, wherein each of the plurality of switching elements is a polymeric positive temperature coefficient overcurrent protection device configured to vary in impedance in response to temperatures changes, the temperature sensing circuit configured to receive an interrogation signal serially transmitted therethrough by a low voltage DC power source to measure an overall impedance value of the plurality of switching elements, wherein the measured impedance is indicative of the temperature changes.
