Abstract

A glucose monitoring system, includes a glucose sensor strip or package of strips. The strip includes a substrate and a glucose monitoring circuit that has electrodes and a bodily fluid application portion of selected chemical composition. An antenna is integrated with the glucose sensor strip. A RFID sensor chip is coupled with the glucose sensor strip and the antenna. The chip has a memory containing digitally-encoded data representing calibration and/or expiration date information for the strip.

Claims

1. A method of determining an analyte level;

the method comprising;

interrogating an in vivo implanted or partially implanted analyte sensor comprising an RFID sensor chip with an analyte meter comprising an RFID reader to receive analyte data from the RFID sensor chip;

receiving via circuitry of the analyte meter one or more signals indicative of the analyte level;

determining via the circuitry the analyte level based on the one or more signals to provide a determined analyte level; and

displaying the determined analyte level on a display of the analyte meter.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the analyte meter comprises a port for receiving an analyte test strip.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the RFID sensor chip is comprised by a continuous analyte sensor.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the analyte is glucose.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the RFID reader is an integrated element of the analyte meter.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the RFID reader is a detachable component of the analyte meter.

7. The method of claim 1, comprising communicating data from the RFID reader to the analyte meter through a multi-pin connection.

8. The method of claim 1, comprising communicating data from the RFID reader to the analyte meter wirelessly.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein data storage for the RFID reader and the analyte meter are integrated into a single location.

10. The method of claim 1, comprising operating the RFID sensor chip at about 13.56 MHz.

11. The method of claim 1, comprising operating the RFID sensor chip at from about 125 kHz to about 134 kHz.

12. The method of claim 1, comprising operating the RFID sensor chip at about 868 MHz.

13. The method of claim 1, comprising operating the RFID sensor chip at about 2.45 GHz.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein the RFID sensor chip is an active sensor chip.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein the RFID sensor chip is a passive sensor chip.

16. The method of claim 1, wherein the RFID sensor chip comprises a memory comprising digitally-encoded data.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the analyte is glucose, and wherein the data is glucose data.

18. The method of claim 1, wherein the display is a liquid crystal display (LCD).

19. The method of claim 1, wherein the display comprises a touchscreen.

20. The method of claim 1, wherein the analyte is glucose, and wherein the method comprises displaying on the display a communication when the glucose level indicates hyperglycemia.

21. The method of claim 1, wherein the analyte is glucose, and wherein the method comprises displaying on the display a communication when the glucose level indicates hypoglycemia.

22. The method of claim 1, wherein the analyte is glucose, and wherein the method comprises displaying on the display a communication when the glucose level indicates impending hyperglycemia.

23. The method of claim 1, wherein the analyte is glucose, and wherein the method comprises displaying on the display a communication when the glucose level indicates impending hypoglycemia.

24. The method of claim 1, comprising determining trending of analyte level based at least in part on the determined analyte level.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein the trending provides for a rate and/or acceleration of analyte level increase or decrease.

26. method of claim 24, comprising displaying on the display visual indicators of analyte level trending to a user of the analyte meter.

27. method of claim 1, comprising displaying on the display a visual representation of analyte level over time to a user of the analyte meter.

28. The method of claim 1, wherein the analyte meter further comprises a communication unit.

29. The analyte measurement system of claim 28, comprising wirelessly receiving data and/or application programs from a computer and/or network via the communication unit.

30. The method of claim 28, wherein the communication unit is configured for connection with the internet.

31. The method of claim 1, comprising connecting the analyte meter to a personal computer or hand-held computing device by serial port or USB connection.
