Abstract

A multicarrier transceiver is provided with a sleep mode in which it idles with reduced power consumption when it is not needed to transmit or receive data. The full transmission and reception capabilities of the transceiver are quickly restored when needed, without requiring the full (and time-consuming) initialization commonly needed to restore such transceivers to operation after inactivity.

Claims

1. A method of operating a multicarrier transceiver having a sleep mode capability, the method comprising:

placing at least one component of a first multicarrier transceiver in a sleep mode;

storing at least one parameter representative of a full power mode of the at least one component of the first multicarrier transceiver;

maintaining synchronization between the first multicarrier transceiver and a second multicarrier transceiver using a synchronization signal while the at least one component of the first multicarrier transceiver is in the sleep mode;

using the at least one stored parameter, for transmission or reception, in response to a signal to awaken from the sleep mode; and

restoring the at least one component of the first multicarrier transceiver from the sleep mode to the full power mode, without needing to reinitialize the first multicarrier transceiver, by using the at least one recovered parameter, wherein the transceiver is used for communications over an internet.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the placing of at least one component in the sleep mode is responsive to a sleep mode signal.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the sleep mode signal comprises a message.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the transceiver is communicating on a common line with ordinary voice communications without the use of a splitter at a subscriber premises.

The method of claim 1, wherein the at least one parameter representative of a current operating state of the first multicarrier transceiver comprises at least one of a frequency-domain equalizer coefficient, a time-domain equalizer coefficient, an echo canceller tap, a data rate, a coding parameter, an interleaving parameter, a fine gain parameter, a subchannel gain parameter, and a bit allocation table.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein placing the at least one component of the first multicarrier transceiver in the sleep mode comprises placing the at least one component of the first multicarrier transceiver in a low power mode.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the synchronization signal is a pilot tone transmitted from one of the multicarrier transceivers to the other of the multicarrier transceivers.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the pilot tone is transmitted between the multicarrier transceivers during normal operation and sleep mode operation.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising transmitting an idle symbol to the second multicarrier transceiver to indicate entry of the first multicarrier transceiver into an idle state.

10. The method of claim 1, further comprising transmitting a reference signal to the second multicarrier transceiver upon exiting the sleep mode.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein portions of the transceivers are implemented in software.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein portions of the transceivers are implemented using respective CPUs.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the transceiver is capable of transmitting or receiving video.

14. A multicarrier transceiver having a sleep mode capability comprising:

a transmitter or receiver portion capable of;

placing at least one component of a first multicarrier transceiver in a sleep mode;

storing at least one parameter representative of a full power mode of the at least one component of the first multicarrier transceiver;

maintaining synchronization between the first multicarrier transceiver and a second multicarrier transceiver using a synchronization signal while the at least one component of the first multicarrier transceiver is in the sleep mode;

using the at least one stored parameter, for transmission or reception, in response to a signal to awaken from the sleep mode; and

restoring the at least one component of the first multicarrier transceiver from the sleep mode to the full power mode, without needing to reinitialize the first multicarrier transceiver, by using the at least one recovered parameter, wherein the transceiver is used for communications over an internet.

15. The transceiver of claim 14, wherein the transmitter or receiver portion is capable of placing the at least one component in the sleep mode in response to a sleep mode signal.

16. The transceiver of claim 15, wherein the sleep mode signal comprises a message.

17. The transceiver of claim 14, wherein the transceiver is communicating on a common line with ordinary voice communications without the use of a splitter at a subscriber premises.

18. The transceiver of claim 14, wherein the at least one parameter representative of a current operating state of the first multicarrier transceiver comprises at least one of a frequency-domain equalizer coefficient, a time-domain equalizer coefficient, an echo canceller tap, a data rate, a coding parameter, an interleaving parameter, a fine gain parameter, a subchannel gain parameter, and a bit allocation table.

19. The transceiver of claim 14, wherein the transmitter or receiver portion is capable of placing the at least one component of the first multicarrier transceiver in the sleep mode by placing the at least one component of the first multicarrier transceiver in a low power mode.

20. The transceiver of claim 14, wherein the synchronization signal is a pilot tone transmitted from one of the multicarrier transceivers to the other of the multicarrier transceivers.

21. The transceiver of claim 20, wherein the pilot tone is transmitted between the multicarrier transceivers during normal operation and sleep mode operation.

22. The transceiver of claim 14, wherein the transmitter portion is capable of transmitting an idle symbol to the second multicarrier transceiver to indicate entry of the first multicarrier transceiver into an idle state.

23. The transceiver of claim 14, wherein the transmitter portion is capable of transmitting a reference signal to the second multicarrier transceiver upon exiting the sleep mode.

24. The transceiver of claim 14, wherein portions of the transceivers are implemented in software.

25. The transceiver of claim 14, wherein portions of the transceivers are implemented using respective CPUs.

26. The transceiver of claim 14, wherein the transceiver is capable of transmitting or receiving video.
