1. An interface device for facilitating transfer of medical information between a patient implantable medical device (PIMD) and a remote network server via public network infrastructure using any of a plurality of generic network access devices having disparate communication protocols, the interface device comprising:

  • a housing configured for portability by an ambulatory patient;

    first communication circuitry provided in the housing and configured to effect communication between the PIMD and the interface device;

    second communication circuitry provided in the housing and configured to effect communication between the interface device and a selected generic network access device of the plurality of generic network access devices;

    a processor coupled to memory, the first communication circuitry and the second communication circuitry, the processor and memory provided in the housing, and the processor configured to;

    translate medical information acquired from the PIMD via the interface device to account for the disparate communication protocols;

    control transmission of data including the translated medical information between the interface device and the selected generic network access device; and

    provide isolation between the PIMD and the selected generic network access device in compliance with a predetermined medical information regulatory standard governing the PIMD.
