Methods for remote assistance of disabled persons
First Claim
1. A computer readable medium comprising software with instructions for a telephonically enabled mobile terminal to:
- store in memory of the mobile terminal a profile for a disabled user, the profile comprising criteria for facilitating communications between the mobile terminal and a remote caregiver, wherein each criterion within the criteria is associated with a respective form of communication at least two of which forms of communication are different;
determine whether a criterion of the criteria has been met; and
initiate communication via the respective form of communication with the remote caregiver without intervention by the disabled user when one of the criteria has been met.

Abstract
A mobile terminal is used to assist individuals with disabilities. A mobile terminal such as a “smartphone” or other commercially available wireless handheld device may be loaded with software. The software may be configured to: (i) store criteria for managing communications between a disabled user of the mobile terminal and a remote caregiver, (ii) determine whether a criterion is satisfied, and if so (iii) initiate a communication from the mobile terminal to the remote caregiver, and (iv) receive a response from the remote caregiver. Thus, through this software, the mobile terminal may dynamically facilitate communications with specific remote caregivers based on specific situations that may confront disabled individuals.

8. A method comprising:
-
receiving first input from a user regarding a criterion; receiving second input from the user regarding a plurality of remote caregivers including at least a first modality to contact a first remote caregiver and a second modality to contact a second remote caregiver; receiving third input from one or more sensors associated with a mobile terminal; comparing the third input from the one or more sensors to the criterion; based at least in part on the comparing, determining that an event has occurred; and causing a signal to be sent to one of the remote caregivers alerting the at least one remote caregiver to occurrence of the event, wherein the at least one remote caregiver is selected at least in part based on the criterion. - View Dependent Claims (9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16)

17. A computer readable medium comprising software with instructions to:
-
receive first input from a user regarding a criterion; receive second input from the user regarding a plurality of remote caregivers including at least a first way to contact a first remote caregiver and a second way to contact a second remote caregiver; store the first and second input in memory associated with a mobile terminal receive third input from one or more sensors associated with the mobile terminal; compare the third input from the one or more sensors to the criterion; based at least in part on the comparison, determine that an event has occurred; and cause a signal to be sent from the mobile terminal to one of the remote caregivers alerting the at least one remote caregiver to occurrence of the event, wherein the at least one remote caregiver is selected at least in part based on the criterion.

18. A method comprising:
-
storing a first criterion for facilitating communications between a user of a mobile terminal and a first remote caregiver; storing a second criterion for facilitating communications between the user of the mobile terminal and a second remote caregiver; determining whether the first criterion or the second criterion has been satisfied; and establishing a communication to the first remote caregiver using a first communication technique or to the second remote caregiver using a second different communication technique based on the result of the determining step. - View Dependent Claims (22, 23, 24)

19. A telephonically enabled mobile terminal comprising:
-
a user interface comprising at least one sensor; a transceiver adapted to send and receive communication signals; memory; and a control system coupled to the user interface, transceiver, and memory, the control system adapted to; store a user profile in the memory, the user profile identifying criteria and a plurality of remote caregivers; determine if the criterion from among the criteria has occurred; cause the transceiver to send a signal to a first remote caregiver using a first communication technique if a first criterion of the criteria has occurred and send a signal to a second remote caregiver using a second different communication technique if a second criterion of the criteria has occurred. - View Dependent Claims (20, 21)
