1. A method of controlling a medical infusion pump system, comprising:
- receiving via a user interface of a controller device user input related to dispensing medicine, the controller device being removably attachable to a pump device to form a mechanical connection and an electrical connection between the pump device and the controller device;
activating a battery-powered motor of a pump drive system housed inside the pump device to rotate one or more full rotations in response to one or more electrical signals communicated from the controller device via the electrical connection, the pump drive system further comprising;
a piston rod, and a mechanism to advance the piston rod toward the medicine housed in the pump device, the mechanism comprising a pawl and a ratchet member, the pawl positioned to engage one or more teeth of the ratchet member, wherein the pawl is adjustable between a first position and a second position to move the ratchet member in a forward direction so as to cause the piston rod to advance toward the medicine, wherein the one or more full rotations of the battery-powered motor cause the pawl to adjust toward one of the first position or the second position; and
advancing the piston rod to dispense a portion of the medicine from the pump device.

Abstract
Some embodiments of an infusion pump device may include a drive system that accurately and incrementally dispenses fluid from the pump device in a controlled manner. Particular embodiments of the drive system may include a rotational motor that is coupled to a string member, which is used to adjust a pawl relative to a ratchet body. In such circumstances, the drive system can provide a reliable and compact infusion pump device that accurately dispenses the desired volume of fluid.

18. A method of controlling a medical infusion pump system, comprising:
-
receiving via a user interface of infusion pump system user input related to dispensing medicine, the infusion pump system comprising control circuitry configured to communicate one or more electrical signals that cause a pump drive system to activate, the infusion pump system comprising a portable housing that houses at least a portion of the pump drive system and that defines an exterior opening through which a medicine cartridge is slidably received into the portable housing, the infusion pump system comprising a cap device that mechanically mates with the portable housing so as to cover the exterior opening and retain the medicine cartridge inside the portable housing, wherein the cap device comprises a piercing member that penetrates a first end region of the medicine cartridge while the pump drive system contacts a plunger of the medicine cartridge at a second end region of the medicine cartridge that is axially opposite from the first end region of the medicine cartridge; activating a battery-powered motor of a pump drive system housed inside the portable housing to rotate one or more full rotations in response to the one or more electrical signals communicated from the control circuitry, the pump drive system further comprising;
a piston rod, and a mechanism to advance the piston rod toward the plunger of the medicine cartridge retained inside the portable housing, the mechanism comprising a pawl and a ratchet member, the pawl positioned to engage one or more teeth of the ratchet member, wherein the pawl is adjustable between a first position and a second position to move the ratchet member in a forward direction so as to cause the piston rod to advance toward the plunger of the medicine cartridge retained inside the portable housing, wherein the one or more full rotations of the battery-powered motor cause the pawl to adjust toward one of the first position or the second position; andadvancing the piston rod to dispense a portion of medicine from the medicine cartridge and through the cap device of the infusion pump system. - View Dependent Claims (19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24)
