Abstract

A method for disambiguating user inputs through a handheld mobile device is disclosed. According to the method, an ambiguous input sequence is received from an input device. A list including one or more disambiguated character sequences is generated on a display device corresponding to the ambiguous input sequence. An additional input is received from the input device. A processor determines that the additional input is an operational input associated with one of a plurality of operations on the disambiguated character sequences. The processor processes the disambiguated character sequences according the one of the plurality of operations associated with the operational input.

Claims

1. A method for disambiguating user inputs to a handheld mobile device, comprising:

receiving an ambiguous input sequence from an input device;

generating, from one or more word databases, a list including one or more disambiguated character sequences corresponding to the ambiguous input sequence;

receiving a selection input for selecting one of the disambiguated character sequences;

receiving a delimiter input for terminating an input session; and

updating the one or more word databases with the selected disambiguated character sequence in response to the delimiter input.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the generation of one or more disambiguated character sequences further comprising:

generating a default character sequence and one or more variant character sequences, the default character sequence being the most likely interpretation of the ambiguous input sequence according to frequency objects associated with the disambiguated character sequences, and the variant character sequences including one or more alternative interpretations of the ambiguous input sequence.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the generation of one or more disambiguated character sequences further comprises determining whether to generate the one or more variant character sequences.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the determination of whether to generate the one or more variant character sequences further comprises:

determining that a flag indicative of the selection input is set; and

generating the variant character sequences in response to the set flag.

5. The method of claim 3, wherein the determination of whether to generate the one or more variant character sequences further comprises:

determining whether one of the disambiguated character sequences corresponds to a previous default character sequence;

determining whether the previous default character sequence corresponds to a word object in the one or more databases if none of the disambiguated character sequences corresponds to the previous default character sequence; and

generate the variant character sequences if the previous default character sequence corresponds to the word object in the one or more databases.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the determination of whether to generate the one or more variant character sequences further comprises:

determining the disambiguated character sequences include at least one prefix object; and

generating at least one of the variant character sequences based on the prefix object.

7. The method of claim 2, further comprising receiving additional character input for the ambiguous input sequence after the selection input and before the delimiter input.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

determining that the selection input is received;

storing the selected disambiguated character sequence in a buffer; and

setting a flag indicating the receiving of the selection input.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving the selection input before the ambiguous input sequence is completed;

storing in a buffer a portion of the disambiguated character sequence when the selection input was received; and

performing a learning function in response to the delimiter input on the portion of the ambiguous input sequence stored in the buffer.

10. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving a movement input;

moving an indicator on a display device through the list in response to the movement input; and

setting a flag indicative of the movement input.

11. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

using the updated one or more word databases to provide customized input experience to a user in future ambiguous inputs.

12. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

updating a frequency object associated with the selected disambiguated character sequence in response to the delimiter input.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the updating of the word databases comprises:

determining that the selected disambiquated character sequence is a user-defined word not currently stored in the word databases;

storing the user-defined word in the word databases upon detecting the delimiter input; and

associating a default frequency object having a predetermined frequency value to the user-defined word.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein the updating of the word databases comprises:

determining that the selected disambiguated character sequence is stored in the word databases;

retrieving, upon detecting the delimiter input, one or more word objects stored in a temporary register in response to the selection input;

including the one or more word objects in the word databases; and

associating a frequency object to the one or more word objects.

15. A handheld mobile device, comprising:

an input device configured to receive user input;

a display device configured to display character sequences in response to the user input;

a memory configured to store one or more word databases; and

a processor configured to;

receive an ambiguous input sequence from the input device;

generate from one or more word databases, a list including one or more disambiguated character sequences on the display device corresponding to the ambiguous input sequence;

receive a selection input for selecting one of the disambiguated character sequences;

receive a delimiter input for terminating an input session; and

update the one or more word databases with the selected disambiguated character sequence in response to the delimiter input.

The handheld mobile device of claim 15, wherein the processor is further configured to generate a default character sequence and one or more variant character sequences, the default character sequence being the most likely interpretation of the ambiguous input sequence according to frequency objects associated with the disambiguated character sequences and the variant character sequences including one or more alternative interpretations of the ambiguous input sequence.

17. The handheld mobile device of claim 16, wherein the processor is further configured to determine whether to generate the one or more variant character sequences.

18. The handheld mobile device of claim 17, wherein the processor is further configured to:

determine that a flag indicative of the selection input is set; and

generate the variant character sequences in response to the set flag.

19. The handheld mobile device of claim 16, wherein the processor is further configured to receive additional character input for the ambiguous input sequence after the selection input and before the delimiter input.

20. The handheld mobile device of claim 15, wherein the processor is further configured to:

determine that the selection input is received;

store the selected disambiguated character sequence in a buffer; and

set a flag indicating the receiving of the selection input.

21. The handheld mobile device of claim 15, wherein the processor is further configured to:

receive the selection input before the ambiguous input sequence is completed;

store in a buffer a portion of the disambiguated character sequence when the selection input was received; and

perform a learning function in response to the delimiter input on the portion of the ambiguous input sequence stored in the buffer.

22. The handheld mobile device of claim 15, wherein the processor is further configured to:

receive a movement input;

move an indicator on the display device through the list in response to the movement input; and

set a flag indicative of the movement input.

23. A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising instructions stored thereon, which, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform a method for disambiguating user inputs to a handheld mobile device, the method comprising:

receiving an ambiguous input sequence from an input device;

generating, from one or more word databases, a list including one or more disambiguated character sequences on a display device corresponding to the ambiguous input sequence;

receiving a selection input for selecting one of the disambiguated character sequences;

receiving a delimiter input for terminating an input session; and

updating the one or more word databases with the selected disambiguated character sequence in response to the delimiter input.

24. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 23, wherein the generation of one or more disambiguated character sequences further comprising:

generating a default character sequence and one or more variant character sequences, the default character sequence being the most likely interpretation of the ambiguous input sequence according to frequency objects associated with the disambiguated character sequences and the variant character sequences including one or more alternative interpretations of the ambiguous input sequence.
