1. A lighting fixture to provide variable occupancy-based lighting of an environment, the lighting fixture comprising:
- a modular sensor bus;
an occupancy sensor, operatively coupled to the modular sensor bus, to provide occupancy information representing a presence or an absence of an occupant in the environment;
an ambient light sensor, operatively coupled to the modular sensor bus, to provide ambient light information representing an ambient light level in the environment;
a plurality of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to provide the variable occupancy-based lighting at a plurality of light levels; and
a power management unit, operatively coupled to modular sensor bus and the plurality of (LEDs), to control the variable occupancy-based lighting based at least in part on the occupancy information provided by the occupancy sensor and the ambient light information provided by the ambient light sensor, the power management module including;
a memory to store a set of rules managing the variable occupancy-based lighting according to the occupancy information and the ambient light information, the set of rules including at least one rule that determines one or more weights to apply to each of the occupancy information and the ambient light information so as to produce weighted signals; and
a processor to select one of the plurality of light levels based on the set of rules in the memory, the occupancy information, and the ambient light information so as to provide the variable occupancy-based lighting and to combine the weighted signals via an arbitration algorithm stored in the memory, and to determine an adjustment to the variable occupancy-based lighting according to an output of the arbitration algorithm.

In embodiments of the present invention, a method and system is provided for designing improved intelligent, LED-based lighting systems. The LED based lighting systems may include fixtures with one or more of rotatable LED light bars, integrated sensors, onboard intelligence to receive signals from the LED light bars and control the LED light bars, and a mesh network connectivity to other fixtures.

1. A lighting fixture to provide variable occupancy-based lighting of an environment, the lighting fixture comprising:

A) a housing; B) an occupancy sensor, disposed in the housing, to provide occupancy information representing a frequency at which the environment is occupied; C) an ambient light sensor, disposed in the housing, to provide ambient light information representing an ambient light level in the environment; D) a plurality of light-emitting diodes (LEDs), disposed in the housing, to provide the variable occupancy-based lighting at a plurality of light levels; and E) a power management unit, disposed in the housing and operatively coupled to the occupancy sensor, the ambient light sensor, and the plurality of LEDs, to control the variable occupancy-based lighting based at least in part on the occupancy information provided by the occupancy sensor and the ambient light information provided by the ambient light sensor, the power management module including; E1) a memory to store; E1a) a set of rules managing the variable occupancy-based lighting according to the occupancy information and the ambient light information, the set of rules including at least one rule that determines one or more weights to apply to each of the occupancy information and the ambient light information so as to produce weighted signals, E1b) an arbitration algorithm to combine the weighted signals, and E1c) a representation of a nonlinear mapping of the ambient light information from the ambient light sensor to values representing predetermined ambient light levels; and E2) a processor to E2a) combine the weighted signals via the arbitration algorithm, E2b) map the ambient light information according to the nonlinear mapping, and E2c) determine an adjustment to the variable occupancy-based lighting according to an output of the arbitration algorithm and the ambient light information.
