1. A surgical access device for providing surgical access through an incision in the body wall to the inside of a body cavity of a patient, the surgical access device having a center axis and comprising:

  • an assembly having a proximal end and a distal end and having an opening around the center axis, the assembly comprising a ring, and a sleeve coupled to and extending generally axially from the ring and positionable in the incision, the sleeve defining a passageway through the body wall between the opening in the assembly and the body cavity;

    a subassembly releasably positionable at the proximal end of the assembly and defining at least two apertures sized for accepting surgical instruments; and

    a member disposed radially outwardly and distally with respect to the at least two apertures, the member positioned with respect to the sleeve to protect the sleeve from instruments inserted through the apertures.
