Abstract

A ventilation control system for controlling the ventilation of a patient. The ventilation control system utilizes a user-friendly user interface for the display of patient data and ventilator status. The user interface includes a graphic representation of a breath cycle that displays the breath cycle currently being ventilated, and is also responsive to changes in ventilation settings to assist the user in evaluating the effect of those changes on the ventilator strategy before the changes are implemented.

Claims

1. A patient ventilator system comprising:

a user interface configured to receive a patient parameter, a ventilator parameter, and an alarm setting for the ventilator parameter, wherein the patient parameter is an ideal body weight for a patient; and

a processor configured to;

identify at least one ventilator parameter limit;

determine at least one alarm setting limit for the ventilator parameter based on the patient parameter, wherein the at least one alarm setting limit is different than the ventilator parameter limit;

compare the alarm setting to the at least one alarm setting limit, wherein the at least one alarm setting limit is representative of at least one value for the ventilator parameter that is not to be exceeded based on the patient parameter;

determine whether the alarm setting exceeds the at least one alarm setting limit; and

in response to the determine operation, perform one of accepting the alarm setting or rejecting the alarm setting.

2. The patient ventilator system of claim 1, further comprising:

in response to determining that the alarm setting does not exceed the at least one alarm setting limit, accepting the alarm setting.

3. The patient ventilator system of claim 1, further comprising:

in response to determining that the alarm setting exceeds the at least one alarm setting limit, rejecting the alarm setting.

4. The patient ventilator system of claim 1, wherein rejecting the alarm setting further comprises providing an indication that the alarm setting exceeds the at least one alarm setting limit.

5. The patient ventilator system of claim 1, wherein the at least one alarm setting limit comprises at least one of:

an upper alarm setting limit and a lower alarm setting limit.

6. The patient ventilator system of claim 1, wherein the at least one value is preset and included in the instructions of the memory.

7. The patient ventilator system of claim 1, wherein the at least one value is a function of the patient parameter.

8. The patient ventilator system of claim 1, wherein the at least one value is configured to prevent patient distress while allowing alarm settings to be customized for a particular patient.

9. A method for determining whether an alarm setting for a ventilator parameter exceeds at least one alarm setting limit, the method implemented on a ventilator having a processor and a memory with instructions that when executed by the processor cause the ventilator to perform the method, the method comprising:

receiving the alarm setting, the ventilator parameter, and a patient parameter, wherein the patient parameter is an ideal body weight for a patient;

identifying a ventilator parameter limit;

determining, by the processor, the at least one alarm setting limit based on the patient parameter, wherein the at least one alarm setting limit is different than the ventilator parameter limit;

comparing the alarm setting to the at least one alarm setting limit, wherein the at least one alarm setting limit is representative of at least one value for the ventilator parameter that is not to be exceeded based on the patient parameter;

determining whether the alarm setting exceeds the at least one alarm setting limit; and

based on the determining operation, performing one of accepting the alarm setting or rejecting the alarm setting.

10. The method of claim 9, further comprising:

in response to determining that the alarm setting does not exceed the at least one alarm setting limit, accepting the alarm setting.

11. The method of claim 9, further comprising:

in response to determining that the alarm setting exceeds the at least one alarm setting limit, rejecting the alarm setting.

12. The method of claim 9, wherein the at least one alarm setting limit comprises at least one of:

an upper alarm setting limit and a lower alarm setting limit.

13. The method of claim 9, wherein the at least one value is preset and included in the instructions of the memory.

14. The method of claim 9, wherein the at least one value is a function of the patient parameter.

15. The method of claim 9, wherein the at least one value is configured to prevent patient distress while allowing alarm settings to be customized for a particular patient.

16. A ventilator comprising a display device, the ventilator configured with a computer having a processor and a memory, the memory communicatively coupled to the processor and containing instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the ventilator to provide a graphical user interface on the display device, the graphical user interface comprising:

a main setup screen, comprising;

a first input element for receiving a patient ideal body weight;

a second input element for receiving a ventilation strategy; and

a third input element for receiving a ventilator parameter; and

an alarm setup screen, comprising;

an alarm button for receiving an alarm setting for the ventilator parameter, wherein the alarm setting is compared to at least one alarm setting limit, wherein the at least one alarm setting limit is automatically determined by the processor based on the received patient ideal body weight and the received ventilation strategy, and wherein the at least one alarm setting limit is different than a predetermined limit for the ventilator parameter; and

a graphical alarm setting display, wherein the received alarm setting is accepted and displayed in the graphical alarm setting display if the alarm setting does not exceed the at least one alarm setting limit.

17. The ventilator of claim 16, wherein the received alarm setting is not accepted and is not displayed in the graphical alarm setting display if the alarm setting exceeds the at least one alarm setting limit.

18. The ventilator of claim 16, wherein the alarm setup screen further comprises:

a graphical element indicating that the alarm setting exceeds the at least one alarm setting limit.

19. The ventilator of claim 16, wherein the at least one alarm setting limit comprises at least one of:

an upper alarm setting limit and a lower alarm setting limit.

20. The ventilator of claim 16, wherein the at least one alarm setting limit is configured to prevent patient distress while allowing alarm settings to be customized for a particular patient.
