Abstract

Methods and systems for modifying or enhancing vision are described. In exemplary embodiments, neural or neuromuscular activity is analyzed to determine a focus or other quality of a visual input, and the focus or quality information used as a basis for controlling an adjustable lens system or optical system.

Claims

1. A method of providing ongoing adaptive vision modification with at least one adjustable optical element, comprising the steps of:

a) detecting a neural signal from one or more regions of a central or peripheral nervous system of a subject;

b) inferring a relation between a component of said neural signal and a quality parameter of a visual input to at least one eye of said subject; and

c) adjusting the at least one adjustable optical element in near-real time in response to the inferred relation between said component of said neural signal and said quality parameter in order to modify said quality parameter of said visual input.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein detecting said neural signal is performed through the use of magnetic resonance detection or imaging.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein detecting said neural signal is performed through the use of at least one electrode placed on or in the immediate proximity of the head of said subject.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein said neural signal is an electroencephalographic or magnetoencephalographic signal.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein said neural signal is an optoelectronic or electrooptical measure of neural activity.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein said neural signal is detected using near infrared imaging.

7. The method of claim 5, wherein said neural signal is an optoelectronic or electrooptical measure of at least one indicator of neural metabolic activity.

8. The method of claim 5, wherein said neural signal is an optoelectronic or electrooptical measure of at least one aspect of blood flow in a neural structure.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein said adjustable optical element comprises a lens system.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein said lens system comprises an elastically deformable shell surrounding an inter-lens space, and wherein adjusting said adjustable optical element comprises adjusting a volume or pressure of fluid in said inter-lens space.

11. The method of claim 9, wherein adjusting said adjustable optical element comprises adjusting a focal length of said lens system.

12. The method of claim 9, wherein adjusting said adjustable optical element comprises adjusting at least one aspect of a cylindrical correction of said lens system.

13. The method of claim 9, wherein adjusting said adjustable optical element comprises adjusting a distance of said optical element relative to an eye surface of the subject.

14. The method of claim 9, wherein adjusting said adjustable optical element comprises adjusting a chromatic aberration correction of said lens system.

15. The method of claim 9, wherein adjusting said adjustable optical element comprises moving said lens system relative to a second lens.

16. The method of claim 1, wherein adjusting said adjustable optical element comprises changing an angle of said optical element with respect to an optical axis of said eye.

17. The method of claim 1, wherein adjusting said adjustable optical element comprises changing a transverse position of said optical element with respect to a optical axis of said eye.

18. The method of claim 1, wherein adjusting said adjustable optical element comprises changing an effective aperture of said optical element.

19. The method of claim 1, wherein adjusting said adjustable optical element comprises changing a transmissivity of said optical element in at least one spectral waveband.

20. The method of claim 1, including repeating steps a) through c) at least about once every 3 seconds.

21. The method of claim 1, including repeating steps a) through c) at least about once per second.

22. The method of claim 1, including repeating steps a) through c) at least about three times per second.

23. The method of claim 1, including repeating steps a) through c) with an update rate of between about ⅓

Hz and about 10 Hz.

24. The method of claim 1, including repeating steps a) through c) with an update rate of between about 1 Hz and about 10 Hz.

25. The method of claim 1, including repeating steps a) through c) with an update rate of between about 1 Hz and about 3 Hz.

26. The method of claim 1, including repeating steps a) through c) with an update rate at least as great as an expected intrinsic accommodation rate of said eye of said subject.

27. The method of claim 1, including repeating steps a) through c) with an update rate at least as great as an expected visual pigment reversal rate of at least a subset of the photoreceptors of said eye.

28. A method of providing ongoing adaptive vision modification with at least one adjustable optical element, comprising the steps of:

a) detecting a neural signal from one or more regions of a central or peripheral nervous system of a subject;

b) inferring a relation between a component of said neural signal and a quality parameter of a visual input to at least one eye of said subject;

c) adjusting the at least one adjustable optical element in near-real time in response to the inferred relation between said component of said neural signal and said quality parameter in order to modify said quality parameter of said visual input; and

d) repeating steps a) through c) in order to modify said quality parameter of said visual input to provide ongoing adaptive vision modification to the subject.
