Abstract

A point of sale (POS) device may be configured to locate a payment system and transmit a payment authorization request from a remote location to a payment system, either directly, or via a payment system directory and/or a SSL Gateway. The invention also includes inserting third party account information into an encrypted portion of the payment request, so the payment request appears as a normal request to the issuing bank, but the third party account information may be used by the third party to bill the customer. The payment system directory is further configured to determine one or more payment processors to direct a payment authorization request, such that a single transaction may me allocated among multiple payment processors for authorization. Moreover, the payment system directory is able to format alternative payment methods into a format that is able to be processed over existing payment networks.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

in response to a first point-of-sale (POS) device querying a second POS device, the first POS device receiving a signed identification token corresponding to the second POS device;

based on the signed identification token, the first POS device determining that the second POS device is associated with a merchant trusted to transmit data on behalf of the first POS device;

based on determining that the second POS device is associated with the trusted merchant, the first POS device requesting, from the second POS device, contact information for a candidate payment system that is configured to process at least a portion of transactions;

the first POS device receiving, from the second POS device, the contact information for the candidate payment system; and

using the received contact information, the first POS device transmitting a payment authorization request for a transaction to the candidate payment system.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the first and second POS devices are controlled by a particular merchant, and wherein the particular merchant is the merchant trusted to transmit data on behalf of the first POS device.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the transaction is conducted at the first POS device, and wherein the first POS device includes a system configured to wirelessly receive and transmit information.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein determining that the second POS device is associated with a party trusted includes examining merchant identification information included in the signed identification token.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

the first POS device receiving payment authorization from the candidate payment system; and

the first POS device authorizing the transaction.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein querying the second POS device and receiving the signed identification token comprises the first POS device monitoring a wireless communication channel for a periodic broadcast from one or more other POS devices.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the first POS device is not controlled by the trusted merchant.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein requesting the contact information for the candidate payment system from the second POS device includes sending a request to a payment system directory having information regarding a plurality of candidate payment systems.

9. An article of manufacture including a non-transitory, tangible computer readable medium having instructions stored thereon that, in response to execution by a first computer-based system, cause the first computer-based system to perform operations comprising:

receiving a signed identification token from a second computer-based system;

based on information included in the signed identification token, determining that the second computer-based system is trusted to transmit data on behalf of the first computer-based system;

based on the determining, requesting contact information from the second computer-based system, wherein the contact information is for a payment system directory that is configured to locate candidate payment systems configured to process at least a portion of transactions;

receiving access information from the second computer-based system;

using the received access information, acquiring contact information for a candidate payment system; and

using the acquired contact information, transmitting a payment authorization request related to a transaction being conducted at the first computer-based system to the candidate payment system.

10. The article of manufacture of claim 9, wherein the operations comprise transmitting the payment authorization request via the second computer-based system.

11. The article of manufacture of claim 9, wherein the operations further comprise receiving payment authorization from the candidate payment system, and in response, authorizing the transaction.

12. The article of manufacture of claim 9, wherein the payment authorization request is for a first portion of an amount for the transaction, and wherein the operations further comprise:

transmitting a second payment authorization request to another candidate payment system for a second portion of the amount for the transaction, wherein the first and second portions of the amount are determined based on an allocation rule.

13. The article of manufacture of claim 9, wherein determining that the second computer-based system is trusted includes determining that the signed identification token corresponds to a trusted merchant.

14. The article of manufacture of claim 9, wherein the first and second computer-based systems respectively include first and second point-of-sale (POS) devices.

15. The article of manufacture of claim 9, wherein the payment system directory is hosted by the second POS device.

16. A first point-of-sale (POS) device, comprising a computer-readable storage device having instructions stored thereon that are executable to cause the first POS device to perform operations comprising:

receiving a signed identification token corresponding to a second POS device;

based on the signed identification token, determining that the second POS device is associated with a party trusted to transmit data on behalf of the first POS device;

based on determining that the second POS device is associated with the trusted party, requesting contact information from the second POS device, wherein the contact information is for a candidate payment system that is configured to process at least a portion of transactions;

receiving, from the second POS device, the contact information for the candidate payment system; and

using the received contact information, transmitting a payment authorization request for a transaction to the candidate payment system.

17. The first POS device of claim 16, wherein determining that the second POS device is associated with the trusted party includes determining that the first and second POS devices correspond to a common owner.

18. The first POS device of claim 16, wherein the operations further comprise acquiring access information for a payment system directory, and wherein the contact information for the candidate payment system is from the payment system directory.

19. The first POS device of claim 16, wherein the second POS device receives the contact information from the candidate payment system from a payment system directory hosted by another computer system and forwards the contact information to the first POS device.

20. The first POS device of claim 16, wherein the operations further include locating a third POS device;

and

transmitting the payment authorization via the third POS device based on a determination that the first POS device has a better wireless signal connection to the third POS device than the second POS device.
