Abstract

Exemplary embodiments are directed to wireless power transfer. A wireless power transfer system include a transmit circuit with a transmit antenna driven from a power amplifier to generate a near field radiation at a resonant frequency within a first coupling mode region surrounding the transmit antenna. One or more repeater antennas are disposed at different locations within the first coupling mode region. Each repeater antenna generates an enhanced near field radiation at the resonant frequency within a coupling mode region corresponding to that repeater antenna. One or more receive circuits including a receive antenna receive power when they are disposed in one of the coupling mode regions corresponding to that repeater antenna.

Claims

1. An apparatus for transferring power wirelessly, comprising:

a transmit antenna configured to generate a first electromagnetic field within a first coverage area; and

a repeater antenna comprising a loop antenna and a capacitive element, the repeater antenna, when located within the first coverage area, configured to receive power within the first electromagnetic field and to generate a second electromagnetic field within a second coverage area different from the first coverage area, the second electromagnetic field comprising an improved electromagnetic field when compared to the first electromagnetic field.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the repeater antenna is further disposed in at least one of a substantially coaxial position relative to the transmit antenna or a substantially coplanar position relative to the transmit antenna.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the second electromagnetic field comprises a stronger electromagnetic field when compared to the first electromagnetic field.

4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the first electromagnetic field generated by the transmit antenna and the second electromagnetic field generated by the repeater antenna are at substantially a same frequency.

5. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein the frequency is a resonant frequency of the repeater antenna.

6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the repeater antenna further comprises an amplifier operably coupled to the loop antenna and the capacitive element, the amplifier configured to amplify the first electromagnetic field at a resonant frequency of the repeater antenna.

7. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the first coverage area and the second coverage area overlap.

8. A wireless power transfer system, comprising:

a transmit antenna configured to generate, in response to a signal from an amplifier, a first electromagnetic field within a first region, the first electromagnetic field being at a resonant frequency; and

a repeater antenna configured to generate, when located within the first region, a second electromagnetic field within a second region, the second electromagnetic field being at the resonant frequency and comprising an enhanced electromagnetic field when compared to the first electromagnetic field,

the transmit antenna and the repeater antenna being configured to transfer power wirelessly to a receive antenna configured to receive power stored in at least one of the first electromagnetic field and the second electromagnetic field when the receive antenna is located within the second region.

9. The system of claim 8, wherein the repeater antenna is further disposed in a substantially coaxial position relative to the transmit antenna.

10. The system of claim 8, wherein the repeater antenna is further disposed in a substantially coplanar position relative to the transmit antenna.

11. The system of claim 10, wherein the repeater antenna is further disposed within a perimeter of the transmit antenna.

12. The system of claim 8, wherein a de-tuning circuit, coupled to the receive antenna, is configured to inhibit resonance of the receive antenna.

13. The system of claim 12, wherein the de-tuning circuit is configured to inhibit resonance of the receive antenna by altering the value of a reactive element coupled to the receive antenna.

14. The system of claim 12, wherein the de-tuning circuit further comprises a switch configured to electrically short at least a portion of a capacitor coupled to the receive antenna.

15. The system of claim 14, wherein a processor, coupled to the switch and the receive antenna, is configured to control resonance of the receive antenna according to a time-domain sequencing of activation.

16. The system of claim 15, wherein the time-domain sequencing comprises an on-off keying signaling protocol of the first electromagnetic field.

17. A wireless charging method, comprising:

generating, in a first region, a first electromagnetic field at a resonant frequency;

generating, in a second region located within the first region, a second electromagnetic field at the resonant frequency, the second electromagnetic field comprising an enhanced electromagnetic field when compared to the first electromagnetic field; and

transmitting power stored in at least one of the first electromagnetic field and the second electromagnetic field to a receive antenna located within the second region.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein generating the second electromagnetic field further comprises disposing a repeater antenna in a substantially coaxial position relative to a transmit antenna.

19. The method of claim 17, wherein generating the second electromagnetic field further comprises disposing a repeater antenna in a substantially coplanar position relative to a transmit antenna.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein disposing a repeater antenna further comprises disposing the repeater antenna within a perimeter of the transmit antenna.

21. The method of claim 17, further comprising de-tuning the receive antenna by selectively modifying a resonant frequency of the receive antenna.

22. The method of claim 21, further comprising selectively de-tuning the receive antenna according to a time-domain sequencing protocol.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein the time-domain sequencing protocol is controlled by an on-off keying signaling protocol of the first electromagnetic field.

24. The method of claim 17, further comprising de-tuning the receive antenna by selectively operating a switch configured to electrically short at least a portion of a capacitor operably coupled to the receive antenna in order to inhibit resonance of the receive antenna.

25. The method of claim 24, further comprising selectively operating the switch according to a time-domain sequencing protocol.

26. The method of claim 25, wherein the time-domain sequencing protocol is controlled by an on-off keying signaling protocol of the first electromagnetic field.

27. A wireless power transfer system, comprising:

a transmit antenna configured to, in response to a signal from an amplifier, generate a first electromagnetic field within a first region, the first electromagnetic field being at a resonant frequency; and

a plurality of repeater antennas, each repeater antenna in the plurality located within the first region and configured to generate a second electromagnetic field within a corresponding region, the second electromagnetic field being at the resonant frequency and comprising an enhanced electromagnetic field when compared to the first electromagnetic field,

at least one of the plurality of repeater antennas being configured to transfer power wirelessly to a plurality of receive antennas, each receive antenna configured to receive power stored in an electromagnetic field generated by at least one of the plurality of repeater antennas.

28. The system of claim 27, wherein each receive antenna is disposed in one of the regions corresponding to one of the plurality of repeater antennas.

29. The system of claim 27, wherein at least one of the plurality of repeater antennas is further disposed in a substantially coplanar position relative to the transmit antenna.

30. The system of claim 27, wherein a first repeater antenna of the plurality of repeater antennas is further disposed in a substantially coaxial position relative to the transmit antenna.

31. The system of claim 30, wherein the plurality of repeater antennas are further disposed within a perimeter of the transmit antenna.

32. The system of claim 27, wherein a second repeater antenna of the plurality of repeater antennas is further disposed in a substantially coplanar position relative to the transmit antenna.

33. The system of claim 27, wherein each receive antenna is coupled to a de-tuning circuit, wherein the de-tuning circuit is configured to inhibit resonance of the receive antenna.

34. The system of claim 33, wherein each receive antenna and each de-tuning circuit is coupled to a processor, the processor configured to control de-tuning of the receive antenna according to a time-domain sequencing of activation.

35. The system of claim 34, wherein the time-domain sequencing is controlled by an on-off keying signaling protocol of the first electromagnetic field.

36. An apparatus for transferring power wirelessly, comprising:

means for generating, in a first region, a first electromagnetic field at a resonant frequency;

means for generating, in a second region located within the first region, a second electromagnetic field at the resonant frequency, the second electromagnetic field comprising an enhanced electromagnetic field when compared to the first electromagnetic field; and

means for transmitting power stored in at least one of the first electromagnetic field and the second electromagnetic field to a receive antenna located within the second region.

37. The apparatus of claim 36, wherein the means for generating the second electromagnetic field further comprises means for disposing a repeater antenna in a substantially coaxial position relative to a transmit antenna.

38. The apparatus of claim 36, wherein the means for generating the second electromagnetic field further comprises means for disposing a repeater antenna in a substantially coplanar position relative to a transmit antenna.

39. The apparatus of claim 38, wherein the means for disposing a repeater antenna further comprises means for disposing the repeater antenna within a perimeter of the transmit antenna.

40. The apparatus of claim 36, further comprising means for de-tuning the receive antenna by selectively modifying a resonant frequency of the receive antenna.

41. The apparatus of claim 40, further comprising means for selectively de-tuning the receive antenna according to a time-domain sequencing protocol.

42. The apparatus of claim 41, wherein the time-domain sequencing protocol is controlled by an on-off keying signaling protocol of the electromagnetic field.

43. The apparatus of claim 36, further comprising means for de-tuning the receive antenna by selectively operating a switch configured to electrically short at least a portion of a capacitance operably coupled to the receive antenna in order to inhibit resonance of the receive antenna.

44. The apparatus of claim 43, further comprising means for selectively operating the switch according to a time-domain sequencing protocol.

45. The apparatus of claim 44, wherein the time-domain sequencing protocol is controlled by an on-off keying signaling protocol of the electromagnetic field.

46. The apparatus of claim 36, wherein the means for generating the first electromagnetic field comprises a transmit antenna, wherein the means for generating the second electromagnetic field comprises a repeater antenna, and wherein the means for transmitting power comprises at least one of the transmit antenna and the repeater antenna.
