1. An analyte monitoring system, comprising:

  • a sensor configured to sample one or more analyte levels of interstitial fluid; and

    a sensor electronics unit operatively coupled to the sensor, the sensor electronics unit comprising sensor electronics operatively coupled to the sensor and configured to receive the sampled one or more analyte levels, a memory for storing a plurality of data points corresponding to the sampled one or more analyte levels, a processor configured to generate one or more data packets for data communication to a receiver unit via the sensor electronics unit, and a temperature detection unit configured to monitor a temperature of an insertion site of the sensor to obtain a temperature reading, wherein the temperature reading is used to adjust the sampled one or more analyte levels;

    wherein the sensor electronics unit includes programming to communicate the generated one or more data packets with each data communication, the one or more data packets including a current data point that corresponds to an analyte level of a current time period and at least one previous data point that corresponds to at least one analyte level of at least one previous time period, such that if the receiver unit does not successfully receive the current data point from the sensor electronics, at a subsequent data communication, the current data point and the at least one previous data point are re-communicated to the receiver unit with a new current data point, and the current data point is received at the receiver unit and ascertained from the subsequent data communication, and to transition from a sleep mode to a communication mode upon activation.
