1. A method of treating a volume of blood for use in closing a wound in a patient, the method comprising the steps of:

  • a) treating a blood volume with an agent which assists in or enhances the clotting or coagulation of the blood volume such that at least a portion of the blood volume will form a clot of blood subsequent to the treatment, wherein the agent is a catalytic agent capable of being removed from the blood volume, wherein the blood volume comprises whole blood and contains sufficient blood components to enable a portion of the blood volume to clot subsequent to the treatment once a clotting cascade is initiated, and wherein the step of treating the blood volume includes initiating the clotting cascade wherein a clot-activated blood volume is formed;

    b) removing the agent from the clot-activated blood volume prior to completion of clotting of the clot-activated blood volume; and

    c) treating the wound with the clot-activated blood volume, wherein the wound is a subcutaneous arterial wound.
