Abstract

An apparatus and method for efficiently collecting data at a remote device with a device that is able to use both analog and digital signals, especially those that are compliant with serial data interface twelve (SDI-12) protocol. The collected data is compressed into a packet and sent to a base station where it is made available. Additionally, the present invention is able to produce alarms in response to the detection of an alarm condition. This data is able to be viewed from virtually anywhere.

Claims

1. An apparatus for monitoring a remote site, the apparatus comprising:

a sensor configured to;

receive a command to enable the sensor,

detect an environmental condition at the remote site upon receipt of a command to enable the sensor,

obtain raw data concerning the detected environmental condition at a location of the remote site at a date and time;

a memory device configured to store calibration information;

a control board including a microprocessor and a plurality of communication ports, one of the communication ports providing a link to the remote sensor, the control board configured to;

receive the raw data from a variety of types of data collection devices, including the remote sensor,

process the raw data based on at least the calibration information stored in the memory device,

place the processed data into at least one packet in real-time, wherein the at least one packet is limited to a predetermined maximum byte length based on control board report settings,

transmit the at least one packet in a wireless communication from the control board to a sensor,

wirelessly download updates to the stored calibration information, and

transmit the at least one data packet to a designated server configured to;

identify a sensor associated with the packet,

extract data indicating a type of the detected environmental condition, a measurement of the detected environmental condition, the remote location, and the date and time,

determine that the measurement of the detected environmental condition meets an alarm level preset by a customer associated with the identified sensor, and

generate a notification to the customer indicating that the detected environmental condition meets the preset alarm level;

a battery configured to provide primary power to the control board; and

a solar panel configured to recharge the battery.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the remote sensor is a digital sensor.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the remote sensor is an analog sensor.

4. The apparatus of claim 3, further comprising a converter linked to the control board, the converter configured to convert raw data from the analog sensor into digital data.

5. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the digital sensor is compatible with a protocol selected from the group consisting of serial data interface twelve (SC-12) protocol, 12C, RS-232, and RS-432.

6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the remote sensor comprises a temperature sensor configured to measure temperature.

7. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the remote sensor comprises a voltage sensor configured to measure a voltage of a battery system.

8. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the remote sensor monitors a liquid level.

9. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the packet is transmitted to a base station or General Packet Radio Service/Global System for Mobile/Communication (GPRS/GSM) gateway.

10. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the data is an N-byte wide message.

11. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the N-byte wide message is a maximum of 96 bytes.

12. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the N-byte wide message is a maximum of 512 bytes.

13. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the N-byte wide message is comprised of a header and sensor data.

14. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the memory device is further configured to store the raw data.

15. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein the data is stored based upon an identifier associated with the remote sensor.
