1. A light engine adapted to supply light to an optical instrument for analysis of a sample having one or more fluorescent tags, the light engine comprising:

  • a first solid state module, wherein the first solid state module includes at least one first solid state light source adapted to emit first light of a first color, and a first collimator adapted to receive the first light of the first color and generate a first collimated beam of light of the first color;

    a second solid state module, wherein the second solid state module includes at least one second solid state light source adapted to emit second light of a second color different than the first color, and a second collimator adapted to receive the second light of the second color and generate a second collimated beam of light of the second color;

    a third solid state module, wherein the third solid state module includes at least one third solid state light source adapted to emit third light of a third color different than the first color and the second color, and a third collimator adapted to receive the third light of the third color and generate a third collimated beam of light of the third color;

    a fourth solid state module, wherein the fourth solid state module includes at least one fourth solid state light source adapted to emit fourth light of a fourth color different than the first color, second color and third color, and a fourth collimator adapted to receive the fourth light of the fourth color and generate a fourth collimated beam of light of the fourth color;

    a fifth solid state module, wherein the fifth solid state module includes at least one fifth solid state light source adapted to emit fifth light of a fifth color different than the first color, second color, third color, and fourth color, and a fifth collimator adapted to receive the fifth light of the fifth color and generate a fifth collimated beam of light of the fifth color;

    an optical output element adapted to couple the solid state light engine to an optical instrument; and

    a plurality of dichroic elements adapted to direct each of the first collimated beam of light, second collimated beam of light, third collimated beam of light, fourth collimated beam of light, and fifth collimated beam of light, into the optical output element to generate an output light for transmission to said optical instrument wherein the output light is adapted to selectively excite the one or more fluorescent tags within the sample.
