1. A suspended light fixture, comprising:
- a first light source having a first optical axis;
a second light source having a second optical axis; and
a lightguide comprising an optical material that forms;
a first surface operable to receive light from the first light source;
a second surface different from and abutting the first surface, a surface normal of the second surface being substantially vertical when the light fixture is suspended;
a third surface different from and abutting the second surface, different from the first surface, and operable to receive light from the second light source, wherein the second surface is disposed between the first surface and the third surface; and
a fourth surface abutting the first and third surfaces, and in facing opposition to the second surface;
at least one light extraction region optically coupled to a first portion of one of the second surface and the fourth surface of the lightguide;
a substantially non-scattering region comprising substantially non-scattering surface portions of each of the second surface and the fourth surface, each of the non-scattering surface portions abutting both the first surface and the third surface, and being in facing opposition to one another, with a substantially non-scattering portion of the optical material of the lightguide therebetween, wherein the light extraction region is surrounded by the non-scattering region, whereinthe non-scattering region forms a planar portion adjacent to each of the first and third surfaces, and contains the light received through the first and third surfaces by total internal reflection at the second and fourth surfaces, andat least one of the second surface, the fourth surface and the optical material disrupts the total internal reflection in the light extraction region such that light is emitted outwardly from both the second and fourth surfaces, the second and fourth surfaces being curved within at least part of the light extraction region.

In one aspect, the present invention provides light emitting devices, including light fixtures and luminaires. In some embodiments, a light emitting device comprises at least one light source, a lightguide operable to receive light from the at least one light source at a first location on the lightguide, at least one light extraction region optically coupled to the lightguide and a substantially non-scattering region along a portion of the lightguide.

43. A suspended light fixture comprising:

a plurality of light sources including at least first and second light sources; a lightguide comprising an optical material that forms; a first surface operable to receive light from the first light source; a second surface different from and abutting the first surface; and a third surface different from and abutting the second surface, in facing opposition to the first surface, and operable to receive light from the second light source, wherein the second surface is disposed between the first surface and the third surface; at least one light extraction region being optically coupled to the second surface of the lightguide; a substantially non-scattering region being disposed between the light blocking region and the light extraction region on the second surface; the substantially non-scattering region comprising substantially non-scattering surface portions of each of the second surface and a fourth surface in facing opposition to the second surface, each of the non-scattering surface portions abutting both the first surface and the third surface, and being in facing opposition to one another, with a substantially non-scattering portion of the optical material of the lightguide therebetween, such that the second and fourth surfaces contain light introduced through the first and third surfaces in a total internal reflection condition, the light extraction region being configured such that one of the second surface, the fourth surface, and the optical material disrupts the total internal reflection condition such that portions of the light are emitted from both the second and fourth surfaces; and a frame that; provides mechanical support for the lightguide, forms a reflector disposed to receive light from the first and second light sources that does not satisfy the total internal reflection condition, and includes a light absorbing region between the second surface and the reflector, that absorbs all light from the first and second light sources that does not directly couple into the lightguide in the total internal reflection condition at the second surface, without a light absorbing region between the fourth surface and the reflector. - View Dependent Claims (44, 45, 46)
