1. A method, comprising:

  • establishing a communication range between a data processing unit and sensor electronics by positioning the data processing unit within a predetermined distance from the sensor electronics;

    receiving an encoded data packet from the data processing unit when the communication range is established, wherein the received encoded data packet includes an activation command;

    decoding the received data packet;

    validating the decoded received data packet; and

    executing one or more routines associated with the received activation command to control the communication or processing of analyte related data;

    wherein the executed one or more routines includes activating the sensor electronics.
