1. A method of applying electromagnetic energy from a plurality of positions around a subject'"'"'s head to stimulate a target deep brain region without over-stimulating superficial cortical brain regions, the method comprising:

  • positioning a plurality of electromagnetic coils about the subject'"'"'s head;

    applying a first pulse to at least one of the electromagnetic coils from a first location outside of the subject'"'"'s head to direct magnetic field energy toward the subject'"'"'s head for a first period of time, wherein the magnetic field energy from the first pulse is sub-action potential threshold for the region of brain peripheral to the target deep brain region;

    applying a second pulse to at least one of the electromagnetic coils from a second location outside of the subject'"'"'s head to direct magnetic field energy toward the subject'"'"'s head for a second period of time, wherein the magnetic field energy from the second pulse is sub-action potential threshold for the region of brain peripheral to the target deep brain region, further wherein a beginning of the second period of time is temporally separated from an end of the first period of time by an interval such that magnetic field energy from the first pulse and magnetic field energy from the second pulse stimulate neurons in the target deep brain region.
