Abstract

An American style football including an inflatable bladder, a cover surrounding the bladder, a lacing coupled to the at least one cover panel, and an electronic circuit. The electronic circuit is coupled to the bladder. The electronic circuit includes at least one sensor and the electronic circuit being configured to produce a signal to enable the position and movement of the football to be monitored during use.

Claims

1. An American style football for use by a player, the football comprising:

an inflatable prolate spheroidal shaped bladder including a valve assembly;

at least first, second, third and fourth cover panels surrounding the bladder, the first, second, third and fourth cover panels coupled together to form cover panel seams, and one of the first and fourth cover panels defining a valve aperture positioned adjacent the valve assembly, the second and third panels defining a back side of the football;

a lacing coupled to the first and fourth cover panels along the cover panel seam between the first and fourth cover panels; and

an electronic circuit coupled to the bladder at a location away from the back side of the football and generally aligned with the position of the lacing such that the back side of the football is formed without an electronic circuit, the electronic circuit having a weight that imbalances the bladder so as to facilitate the player'"'"'s ability to impart spin to the football as it is thrown, the electronic circuit including at least one sensor and the electronic circuit including a micro-processor having sample rate capability and configured to produce and actively transmit an electronic signal to enable a characteristic of the football to be monitored during use.

2. The football of claim 1, wherein the bladder includes first and second side walls defining an expandable cavity, wherein the first and second side walls are coupled together to form a bladder seam, and wherein the bladder seam extends about the periphery of the bladder.

3. The football of claim 2, wherein the first and second side walls are formed of multilayered sheets of flexible material, and wherein the electronic circuit is positioned between two of the sheets of one of the first and second side walls.

4. The football of claim 3, wherein the flexible material is selected from group consisting of a urethane, an ester urethane, a vinyl, eva, a thermoplastic material, a polymeric material, rubber and combinations thereof.

5. The football of claim 2, wherein first and second side walls are bonded to each other to form the bladder seam, and wherein the bonding is selected from the group consisting of RF welding, thermal bonding, chemical bonding, adhesive bonding and combinations thereof.

6. The football of claim 1, wherein the bladder defines or includes a pocket, and wherein the electronic circuit is positioned within the pocket.

7. The football of claim 1, wherein the at least one sensor is selected from the group selected from a pressure sensor, a piezoelectric sensor, a motion sensor, a temperature sensor, and combinations thereof.

8. The football of claim 1, wherein the electronic circuit includes a rechargeable battery.

9. The football of claim 8, further comprising a remote charger, and wherein the remote charger is configured to charge the rechargeable battery when positioned near the football.

10. The football of claim 8, wherein the bladder further includes a valve assembly and electrical leads extending from the electronic circuit to the valve assembly, and wherein the electrical leads facilitate charging of the battery.

11. The football of claim 2, wherein the cover panel seams are angularly spaced apart from the bladder seam with respect to the longitudinal axis of the football.

12. The football of claim 1, wherein a second plane intersects the longitudinal axis, at least a portion of the valve assembly and at least a portion of the electronic circuit.

13. The football of claim 1, wherein the weight of the electronic circuit is less than one ounce.

14. The football of claim 1, further comprising a lining positioned between the first, second, third and fourth cover panels and the bladder, and a reinforcing panel coupled to at least one of the first and fourth cover panels in alignment with the lacing.

15. The football of claim 14, wherein the bladder further includes a flap coupled to the outer surface of the bladder and generally positioned to align with the lacing.

16. The football of claim 6, wherein the pocket includes at least one pocket opening to enable the sensor to sense the air pressure within the bladder.

17. The football of claim 1, wherein the electronic circuit includes a standby mode that initiates when the football is at rest for a predetermined period of time.

18. The football of claim 1, wherein the electronic circuit is an electronic chip that is spaced apart from the valve assembly.

19. The football of claim 1, wherein the characteristic is selected from the group consisting of the location of the football, the movement of the football, the speed of the football, the acceleration of the football, the deceleration of the football, the temperature of the football and combinations thereof.

20. The football of claim 1, wherein the characteristic is the rotation of the football.

21. The football of claim 1, the bladder further includes a flap coupled to the outer surface of the bladder and spaced apart from the valve assembly.

22. The football of claim 21, wherein the flap is bonded to the bladder, and wherein the electronic circuit is positioned on or beneath the flap.
