Abstract

A method of providing an electrical signal to a cranial nerve of a patient for treating a medical condition, including providing an electrical signal generator, coupling at least a first electrode to a cranial nerve of the patient and to the electrical signal generator, generating an electrical signal with the electrical signal generator, and applying the electrical signal to the cranial nerve, using the at least a first electrode, for a duration less than a cardiac period of the patient and during the cardiac period of the patient. In addition, an implantable medical device capable of implementing the method is disclosed.

Claims

1. An implantable medical device (IMD), comprising:

a cardiac cycle determination module, the cardiac cycle determination module is configured to determine;

a cardiac cycle duration;

a delay duration, where the delay duration is determined based on being a predefined fraction of the determined cardiac cycle duration; and

a signal application duration, where the signal application duration is determined based on being a predetermined fraction of the determined cardiac cycle duration;

a lead assembly; and

a signal generator.

2. The implantable medical device (IMD) of claim 1, wherein the cardiac cycle duration is determined by reference to an interval based on at least one of:

an R-R interval;

a P-P interval;

a T-T interval;

a P wave interval;

a PR segment interval;

a PQ segment interval;

a QRS interval; and

an ST segment interval.

3. The implantable medical device (IMD) of claim 1, wherein the delay duration comprises a fixed time duration.

4. The implantable medical device (IMD) of claim 1, wherein the signal application duration comprises a fixed time duration.

5. The implantable medical device (IMD) of claim 4, wherein the fixed time duration is less than the determined cardiac cycle duration.

6. The implantable medical device (IMD) of claim 1, wherein the lead assembly comprises a first electrode and a second electrode.

7. The implantable medical device (IMD) of claim 1, wherein the cardiac cycle determination module is further configured to detect a cardiac signal during a cardiac detection duration.

8. The implantable medical device (IMD) of claim 1, wherein the signal generator applies an electrical signal to the lead assembly operatively coupled to a cranial nerve during the determined signal application duration.

9. The implantable medical device (IMD) of claim 1, wherein the cardiac cycle determination module is further configured to determine a cardiac detection duration.

10. The implantable medical device (IMD) of claim 9, wherein a sum of the delay duration, the signal application duration and the cardiac detection duration equals the cardiac cycle duration.

11. The implantable medical device (IMD) of claim 9, wherein the delay duration and the cardiac detection duration overlap.

12. A method of providing an electrical signal to a cranial nerve, comprising:

determining a cardiac cycle duration;

determining a delay duration, where the delay duration is determined based on being a predefined fraction of the determined cardiac cycle duration;

determining a signal application duration, where the signal application duration is determined based on being a predetermined fraction of the determined cardiac cycle duration; and

applying the electrical signal to the cranial nerve for the signal application duration upon a conclusion of the delay duration within the cardiac cycle duration.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the cardiac cycle duration is determined by reference to an interval based on at least one of:

an R-R interval;

a P-P interval;

a T-T interval;

a P wave interval;

a PR segment interval;

a PQ segment interval;

a QRS interval; and

an ST segment interval.

14. The method of claim 12, wherein determining the delay duration comprises determining a fixed time duration.

15. The method of claim 12, wherein determining the signal application duration comprises determining a predefined fraction of the determined cardiac cycle duration.

16. The method of claim 12, wherein determining the signal application duration comprises determining a fixed time duration.

17. The method of claim 12, wherein a signal generator applies the electrical signal to a lead assembly operatively coupled to a cranial nerve during the determined signal application duration.

18. A computer readable non-transitory medium encoded with instructions for causing a processor to execute a method comprising:

determining a cardiac cycle duration;

determining a delay duration, where the delay duration is determined based on being a predefined fraction of the determined cardiac cycle duration;

determining a signal application duration, where the signal application duration is determined based on being a predetermined fraction of the determined cardiac cycle duration; and

applying the electrical signal to the cranial nerve for the signal application duration upon a conclusion of the delay duration within the cardiac cycle duration.
