Abstract

Some embodiments of a wearable infusion pump system can include a pump device having a drive system to dispense a medicine to a user, an activity sensor that detects a possible change in an activity level of the user, and a controller to activate the drive system to dispense the medicine to the user. The controller device can query the user to indicate whether a detected activity level of the user represents an actual change in the activity level of the user. The controller device can alter the medicine dispensing schedule based on the user indicated changes in activity level.

Claims

1. A method of administering insulin to a user, comprising:

delivering insulin from a portable infusion pump system to the user according to a medicine dispensing schedule, wherein the portable infusion pump system is worn by the user;

detecting an activity level of the user using an activity sensor that is in communication with control circuitry of the portable infusion pump system and is worn by the user, wherein the activity sensor comprises at least an accelerometer;

querying the user on a user interface of the portable infusion pump system to confirm whether the detected activity level of the user represents an actual activity level of the user; and

altering the delivery of insulin from the portable infusion pump system as a result of the user confirming via the user interface that the detected activity level represents the actual activity level of the user.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising prompting the user for user input on the user interface of the portable infusion pump system to authorize a decrease in the delivery of insulin that is determined in response to said detected activity level.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein said altering comprises changing a scheduled dosage of the delivery of insulin from the portable infusion pump system to the user in response to the user input that authorizes said decrease in the delivery of insulin.

The method of claim 1, wherein detecting the activity level of the user using the activity sensor in the portable infusion pump system includes detecting whether the user entered data into the pump system and determining if a detected motion of the portable infusion pump system is within a threshold range of time from when the user entered data into the portable infusion pump system, wherein the motion of the pump system is ignored if the motion of the portable infusion pump system is within the threshold range of time from when the user entered data into the portable infusion pump system.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein detecting the activity level of the user using the activity sensor in the portable infusion pump system includes determining whether the detected activity level represents an exercise activity.

6. The method of claim 5, further comprising displaying via the user interface an alert to indicate to the user that the exercise activity is potentially unsafe.

7. The method of claim 5, further comprising prompting the user via the user interface to delay the exercise activity.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising prompting the user via the user interface to input blood glucose data from a blood strip reader after detecting the activity level of the user using the activity sensor.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising receiving data indicative of a blood glucose level of the user.

The method of claim 1, wherein delivering the insulin from the portable infusion pump system comprises dispensing the insulin from a disposable and non-reusable pump device of the portable infusion pump system that receives control signals from a reusable controller device removably attached to the disposable and non-reusable pump device, the reusable controller device housing said control circuitry.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein querying the user on the user interface comprises prompting the user to contact one or more interface buttons of the reusable controller device that is removably attached to the disposable and non-reusable pump device.

The method of claim 11, wherein the disposable and non-reusable pump device of the portable infusion pump system receives the control signals from the reusable controller device via a first electrical connector of the pump device that mates with a second electrical connector of the controller device when the controller and the pump device are removably attached in a fixed relationship.

The method of claim 1, wherein the activity sensor comprises at least said accelerometer mounted within a controller housing component of the portable infusion pump system, the controller housing component being different from a pump housing component of the portable infusion pump system that houses an insulin reservoir and a drive system configured to dispense the insulin from the insulin reservoir.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein the activity sensor comprises at least said accelerometer mounted within a pump housing component of the portable infusion pump system that houses an insulin reservoir and a drive system configured to dispense the insulin from the insulin reservoir.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein said altering comprises adjusting the delivery of insulin from the portable infusion pump system to the user in response to the user input via the user interface that confirms the detected activity level represents the actual activity level of the user and additional user input via the user interface that authorizes a decrease in the delivery of insulin.

16. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

detecting an increased motion level of the user above a threshold motion level using the activity sensor, the increased motion level being indicative of a detected seizure; and

adjusting the delivery of insulin from the portable infusion pump system to the user in response to the detected seizure.
