1. An apparatus comprising:

  • a processing system configured to;

    generate a plurality of spatial streams for communicating with a plurality of access terminals; and

    determine an allocation of the plurality of spatial streams to the plurality of access terminals based on at least one metric for each access terminal of the plurality of access terminals, wherein determining the allocation comprises determining a first number of the plurality of spatial streams to be allocated to a first access terminal of the plurality of access terminals based on a first antenna configuration of the first access terminal, wherein the processing system is further configured to split a high data rate signal for the first access terminal into a second number of lower data rate streams, wherein the second number is equal to the first number, and wherein the lower data rate streams are allocated to the first access terminal.
