Catheter locator apparatus and method of use
First Claim
1. A catheter locator system comprising:
- a processor;
a display operatively connected to the processor;
a detector operatively connected to the processor, the detector being configured to be positioned over a predetermined location of a subject;
a coil operatively connected to the processor, the coil being configured to be inserted into a catheter; and
a memory storing;
(a) a first predetermined delineation representative of a mid-sagittal line of a subject;
(b) a second predetermined delineation representative of a diaphragm of the subject; and
(c) instructions which when executed by the processor, cause the processor to, in cooperation with the display, the detector, the coil and the memory, while at least one of the coil is being advanced and the coil is being removed from the catheter;
(a) display the first predetermined delineation representative of the mid-sagittal line of the subject and the predetermined delineation representative of the diaphragm of the subject;
(b) for an esophageal segment, determine and display a first position including a first depth of the coil in relation to the detector;
(c) for a stomach segment, determine and display a second position including a second depth of the coil in relation to the detector;
(d) for a pylorus segment, determine and display a third position including a third depth of the coil in relation to the detector; and
(e) for a duodenum segment, determine and display a fourth position including a fourth depth of the coil in relation to the detector.

Abstract
This disclosure relates to a method of catheter and radiating coil location in a human body and in particular to the determination over time of the location of the tip of a catheter as it is inserted and during its use in the body. In particular when a radiating coil is used in conjunction with a catheter, a coil locating device can be used to determine the distance the coil is from the device and hence its depth in the body of a patient. To assist a clinician using the coil-locating device, a display is provided that shows both a reference image of a part or portion of a body (non-subject body) and an image of the coil located on the display with reference to the reference image. This is achieved by locating the coil-locating device on or over a predetermined landmark on the patient'"'"'s body.
