Abstract

A system and method for generating a patient-specific anatomical atlas, e.g., includes, for each patient of a patient population: obtaining a respective anatomical atlas, and registering, by a computer processor, the respective anatomical atlas to an anatomical image of a current patient to obtain a respective registered anatomical atlas, and further includes, determining, by the processor, an average of the registered anatomical atlases.

Claims

1. A system for generating an anatomical atlas, the system comprising:

a computer processor configured to;

using a common anatomical atlas for a plurality of patients of a patient population, perform a respective registration of the common anatomical atlas for each of the plurality of patients of the patient population to obtain a respective patient-population anatomical atlas;

register each of the respective patient-population anatomical atlases to an anatomical image of a current patient to obtain a respective patient-specific anatomical atlas; and

determine an average of the patient-specific anatomical atlases to obtain an average patient-specific anatomical atlas.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the average is a weighted average, different weights being applied to different ones of the registered anatomical atlases.

3. The system of claim 2, wherein each of the respective weights depends on relative quality of a respective registration of an anatomical image of the respective patient of the patient population to the current patient.

The system of claim 3, wherein the quality is measured based on at least one of a degree of consonance of microelectrode recording (MER) data of the respective patient of the patient population and the current patient, and mutual information between an anatomical image of the respective patient of the patient population and an anatomical image of the current patient.

The system of claim 4, wherein the degree of consonance is determined for each of a plurality of sub-regions of a relevant anatomical region to determine an overall degree of anatomical consonance, different weights being applied to different ones of the sub-regions for determining the overall degree of anatomical consonance.

6. The system of claim 2, wherein each of the respective weights depends on a respective degree of similarity between the respective patient of the patient population and the current patient with respect to one or more patient conditions.

7. The system of claim 6, wherein the one or more patient conditions include at least one of a patient age, a patient sex, and an overall size of a relevant anatomical region.

8. The system of claim 2, wherein:

each of the respective weights depends on a respective degree of similarity between a target volume of activation (VOA) of the respective patient of the patient population and the current patient; and

the target VOA is a region targeted for activation by a stimulation provided by a leadwire.

The system of claim 1, wherein the respective registrations of the common anatomical atlas includes determining a respective first transformation of the common anatomical atlas as a representation of the respective patient-population anatomical atlas, the respective first transformation being of the common anatomical atlas to anatomical structures outlined in a respective image of the respective patient of the patient population.

The system of claim 9, wherein each of the registrations of the respective patient-population anatomical atlases to the anatomical image of the current patient includes determining a respective second transformation which is of the respective patient-population anatomical atlas as a representation of the respective patient-specific anatomical atlas of the current patient.

11. The system of claim 10, wherein the registering of the respective patient-population anatomical atlases to the anatomical image of the current patient includes combining the respective first and second transformations to obtain a respective third transformation.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein the determining of the average of the patient-specific anatomical atlases includes:

averaging the third transformations to obtain an average transformation; and

applying the average transformation to the common anatomical atlas.

13. The system of claim 12, wherein different weights are applied to different ones of the third transformations, the averaging being of the differently weighted third transformations.

14. The system of claim 13, wherein:

the anatomical structure outlines are three-dimensional; and

the image of the respective patient of the patient population includes a plurality of two-dimensional image slices of a three-dimensional region, respective two-dimensional sections of the three-dimensional anatomical structure outlines being made in respective ones of the two-dimensional slices.

21. The system of claim 1, wherein the registering of the patient-population anatomical atlases includes an anisotropic scaling in different directions relative to landmarks registered in the anatomical image of the current patient.

23. The system of claim 1, wherein the registering of the patient-population anatomical atlases includes a non-linear scaling at different distances from a landmark registered in the anatomical image of the current patient.

15. A computer-implemented method for generating an anatomical atlas, the method comprising:

using a common anatomical atlas for a plurality of patients of a patient population, performing, by a computer processor, a respective registration of the common anatomical atlas for each of the plurality of patients of the patient population to obtain a respective patient-population anatomical atlas;

registering, by the processor, each of the respective patient-population anatomical atlases to an anatomical image of a current patient to obtain a respective patient-specific anatomical atlas; and

determining, by the processor, an average of the patient-specific anatomical atlases to obtain an average patient-specific anatomical atlas.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the average is a weighted average, different weights being applied to different ones of the registered anatomical atlases.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein each of the respective weights depends on relative quality of a respective registration of an anatomical image of the respective patient of the patient population to the current patient.

The method of claim 17, wherein the quality is measured based on at least one of a degree of consonance of microelectrode recording (MER) data of the respective patient of the patient population and the current patient, and mutual information between an anatomical image of the respective patient of the patient population and an anatomical image of the current patient.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the degree of consonance is determined for each of a plurality of sub-regions of a relevant anatomical region to determine an overall degree of anatomical consonance, different weights being applied to different ones of the sub-regions for determining the overall degree of anatomical consonance.

20. A non-transitory computer-readable medium on which are stored instructions that are executable by a processor, the instructions which, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to perform a method for generating an anatomical atlas, the method comprising:

using a common anatomical atlas for a plurality of patients of a patient population, performing a respective registration of the common anatomical atlas for each of the plurality of patients of the patient population to obtain a respective patient-population anatomical atlas;

registering each of the respective patient-population anatomical atlases to an anatomical image of a current patient to obtain a respective patient-specific anatomical atlas; and

determining an average of the patient-specific anatomical atlases to obtain an average patient-specific anatomical atlas.

22. The system of 21, wherein the registering of the patient-population anatomical atlases further includes a non-linear scaling at different distances from a landmark registered in the anatomical image of the current patient.
