1. An apparatus for locating passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags with a designated operating frequency embedded in a body, the apparatus comprising:

  • an elongated and cylindrical probe, wherein the probe is configured for insertion into an incision in a body in order to advance a distal end of the probe towards one or more PIT tags within the body, the probe housing;

    a single coil, the single coil located at the distal end of the probe and configured to transmit a continuous signal that resonates at a designated frequency of one or more PIT tags to be located within the body;

    a depth calculation circuit configured to determine a depth of a PIT tag within the body from the distal end of the probe, the determination based at least on a signal received from the PIT tag in response to the continuous signal transmitted from the single coil;

    a display device configured to display the depth determined by the depth calculation circuit; and

    one or more electrical leads extending from the coil in the distal end of the probe to a connector at a proximal end of the probe in data communication with the depth calculation circuit; and

    a handheld device configured for movement outside the body in order to determine a lateral position of the PIT tag within the body, wherein the handheld device is configured to identify an approximate lateral location of the PIT tag whereat the incision is placed and the elongated and cylindrical probe is inserted.
