1. A system for preparing a joint of a patient prior to positioning a medical prosthesis in the joint, the medical prosthesis being positioned with respect to an anatomical feature of the patient, the system comprising:

  • a patient interface removably engageable to the patient adjacent to the joint, the patient interface comprising;

    a base having a first coupler;

    at least one pin configured to be advanced through the base into the bone to couple the base to the bone; and

    an elongate alignment instrument having a proximal end, a distal end, a second coupler, and a contacting probe extending from the distal end of the elongate alignment instrument and configured to contact a plurality of spaced apart anatomic locations, a movement portion configured to allow movement of the contacting probe relative to the base to contact the spaced apart anatomical locations; and

    a pivot providing for pivotal movement of the contacting probe relative to another portion of the patient interface;

    a first measuring device comprising a first inertial sensor, the first measuring device configured to be removably coupled to the first coupler of the patient interface and thereby to a bone of the patient in a manner providing zero degrees of freedom between the first inertial sensor and the bone of the patient such that the first inertial sensor detects changes in orientation of the bone of the patient;

    a second measuring device comprising;

    a housing configured to be removably and physically coupled to the second coupler of the elongate alignment instrument in a manner providing zero degrees of freedom between the housing and the elongate alignment instrument, anda second inertial sensor disposed on or in the housing, the second inertial sensor configured to detect orientation of the elongate alignment instrument with respect to the anatomical feature or the joint;

    a display, a user interface, and a processor physically disposed on or in at least one of the first and the second measuring devices to provide zero degrees of freedom of the display, the user interface, and the processor relative to the first or the second measuring device when the first or the second measuring device is physically coupled to the first or second coupler, the processor configured to receive inputs from the user interface in operation; and

    a communications module coupled to the first and second measuring devices for electronic communications between the first and second measuring devices;

    wherein the system is configured to contact the plurality of spaced apart anatomical locations with the contacting probe to identify and store the orientation of a reference plane of the anatomical feature, and wherein the first measuring device provides a signal to the second measuring device for compensating for movement of the patient by adjusting the orientation of the reference plane of the anatomic feature that is stored and the system provides a readout information about the reference plane of the anatomical feature on or by the display.
