1. An intraocular lens, comprising:

  • an optic having a clear aperture having an outer diameter, the optic comprising;

    a first surface and an opposing second surface, the surfaces being disposed about an optical axis, the first surface having a first radius of curvature at the optical axis and the second surface having a second radius of curvature at the optical axis;

    a central zone disposed about the optical axis having an outer diameter sized such that under bright or intermediate lighting conditions most of the light passing through the pupil and entering the IOL passes through the central zone and wherein the central zone has an optical power that progressively and continuously increases from a first paraxial optical power at the optical axis selected to provide hyperfocal vision when the intraocular lens is disposed within an eye to a second optical power at the outer diameter that is greater than the first paraxial optical power, wherein the difference in the optical power between the first paraxial optical power and the second optical power is less than or equal to about 1.5 diopters and the second optical power is greater than or equal to the optical power of a reference spherical lens at a diameter equal to the outer diameter of the central zone, the reference spherical lens having a paraxial optical power equal to the first paraxial optical power, a first surface radius of curvature equal to the first radius of curvature at the optical axis, and a second surface radius of curvature equal to the second radius of curvature at the optical axis; and

    an outer zone disposed about the central zone, the outer zone comprising an inner diameter and an outer diameter equal to the outer diameter of the clear aperture, the outer zone characterized by a third optical power at the inner diameter which is less than the first paraxial optical power and selected to provide distance vision when the intraocular lens is disposed within the eye, wherein the outer zone further comprises a negative spherical aberration,wherein the central zone and the outer zone are the only two zones in the optic and entirely fill the clear aperture of the optic, wherein the variation in optical power over the entire clear aperture is less than or equal to 2.0 diopters,and wherein the central and outer zones are configured such that more light for distant vision under low lighting conditions is focused by the outer zone onto the surface of the retina.
