Abstract

A system and method involve transceiving successive first and second synchronization signals defining endpoints of a frame. A digital signal is transceived by a modulating time interval between portions of the first and second synchronization signals. A first data pulse is transceived during the frame. A relative position in the frame of the first data pulse represents a first analog signal.

Claims

1. A data communication method for use over a wireless communication channel, the method comprising:

receiving a wirelessly transmitted data transmission frame over a wireless communication channel, the data transmission frame comprising a first synchronization signal that defines an endpoint of the data transmission frame;

measuring a characteristic of the received first synchronization signal; and

determining a level of noise for transmissions over the wireless communication channel based on the measured characteristic of the received first synchronization signal.

2. The data communication method of claim 1, wherein the first synchronization signal comprises at least two pulses that have a defined timing between the pulses.

3. The data communication method of claim 2, wherein the characteristic of the received first synchronization signal is a time interval between the two pulses comprising the first synchronization signal.

4. The data communication method of claim 3, wherein the data transmission frame further comprises at least one first data pulse during the data transmission frame, a relative position in the data transmission frame of the first data pulse representing a first analog signal.

5. The data communication method of claim 4, wherein the determined level of noise is used to assign a variability characteristic to a detected timing of the relative position of the first data pulse in the data transmission frame.

6. The data communication method of claim 4, further comprising determining a signal strength associated with the at least one pulse selected from the at least two pulses, and the first data pulse.

7. The data communication method of claim 1, wherein the determining of the level of noise includes comparing the characteristic of a plurality of the received first synchronization signal to a threshold value.

The data communication method of claim 7, wherein the characteristic of the plurality of the received first synchronization signal is determined by an evaluation of the variability of the characteristic for at least one of the plurality of the received first signal, the evaluation being a determination of at least one of:

(a) a statistical variance;

(b) a standard deviation;

(c) a statistical distribution; and

, (d) a frequency content.

The method of claim 1, wherein the first synchronization signal defines the start of the data transmission frame, and further comprising a second synchronization signal that defines the end of the data transmission frame, wherein a modulating time interval between the first and second synchronization signals represents a digital signal, and includes at least three different values, which are comprised of different first, second, and third frame intervals.

10. The method of claim 9, in which the modulating time interval between the first and second synchronization signals represents a state of the digital signal during a present frame relative to the state during a previous frame.

11. The method of claim 10, further comprising receiving:

the first frame interval, if the state of the digital signal during the present frame is unchanged from the previous frame;

the second frame interval, if the state of the digital signal changed from a first state value during the previous frame to a second state during the present frame; and

the third frame interval, if the state of the digital signal changed from the second state value during the previous frame to the first state value during the present frame.

12. The method of claim 9, further comprising receiving at least one second data pulse during the frame, a relative position in the frame of the second data pulse representing a second analog signal.

13. The method of claim 12, further comprising:

defining a first data band to receive the first data pulse therein, the first data band separated from the first and second synchronization signals by at least a first guard band that exceeds durations of the first and second synchronization signals; and

defining a second data band to receive the second data pulse therein, the second data band separated from the first and second synchronization signals by at least a second guard band that exceeds durations of the first and second synchronization signals, the first and second data bands separated by at least a third guard band that exceeds durations of the first and second synchronization signals.

14. The method of claim 9, in which the modulating time interval between the first and second synchronization signals is modulated over a plurality of frames to represent the digital signal.

15. The method of claim 14, further comprising receiving, via the digital signal, a digital synchronization command to initiate subsequent communication of digital data.

16. The method of claim 15, in which the digital synchronization command includes a predetermined start bit followed by a predetermined start bit followed by a predetermined sequence of following bits.

17. The method of claim 15, further comprising receiving a header, via the digital signal, after receiving the digital synchronization command.

The method of claim 1, wherein wireless communication channel comprises a plurality of data pulses selected from radio-frequency (RF) pulses, magnetic field coupling pulses, electric field coupling pulses, ultrasound pulses, pressure pulses, thermal pulses, infrared (IR) pulses, light pulses, electromagnetic pulses, and tissue conduction pulses.

19. The data communication method of claim 1, wherein the determined level of noise is used to perform at least one of:

(a) rejecting the data transmission frame;

(b) qualifying the data transmission frame;

(c) ascertaining or marking a range of error associated with the data transmission frame; and

, (d) compensating for error associated with the data transmission frame.

20. A system including:

a receiver circuit to receive at least a wirelessly transmitted data transmission frame over a wireless communication channel, wherein the data transmission frame comprises a first synchronization signal that defines an endpoint of the data transmission frame; and

a controller circuit, coupled to the receiver circuit for delivering at least one control signal thereto, the controller including a noise detection circuit including executable instructions defining a measurement of a characteristic of a the received first synchronization signal, and defining a determination of a level of noise for transmissions over the wireless communication channel based on the measured characteristic of the received first synchronization signal.
