Abstract

An access port for subcutaneous implantation is disclosed. Such an access port may comprise a body for capturing a septum for repeatedly inserting a needle therethrough into a cavity defined within the body. Further, the access port may include at least one feature structured and configured for identification of the access port subsequent to subcutaneous implantation. Methods of identifying a subcutaneously implanted access port are also disclosed. For example, a subcutaneously implanted access port may be provided and at least one feature of the subcutaneously implanted access port may be perceived. Further, the subcutaneously implanted access port may be identified in response to perceiving the at least one feature. In one embodiment, an identification feature is engraved or otherwise defined by the access port, so as to be visible after implantation via x-ray imaging technology.

Claims

1. An access port for providing subcutaneous access to a patient, comprising:

a port base defining a fluid cavity, the port base formed from a base material;

a substrate separate from the port base formed from a substrate material, the substrate attached to the port base, the substrate including an inner surface facing toward the fluid cavity and an outer surface facing away from the fluid cavity; and

a radiopaque material adhered to the substrate inner surface prior to attachment of the substrate to the port base, the radiopaque material including an identification feature.

2. The access port as defined in claim 1, wherein the substrate material includes an acetyl resin or a high-density polyethylene.

3. The access port as defined in claim 1, wherein the substrate material and the base material are substantially similar.

4. The access port as defined in claim 1, wherein the identification feature is visible through the substrate after attachment of the substrate to the port base.

5. The access port as defined in claim 1, wherein the substrate is insert molded with the port base, and wherein the radiopaque material includes a metallic powder intermixed with an ink.

6. The access port as defined in claim 5, wherein the metallic powder is tungsten powder and wherein the tungsten powder is intermixed with the ink at a ratio of three parts tungsten powder to one part ink.

7. The access port as defined in claim 1, wherein the identification feature includes the letters “

C” and

T”

8. The access port as defined in claim 7, wherein the letters are outlined by a double-triangle border.

9. The access port as defined in claim 1, wherein the identification feature identifies the access port as power injectable.

10. The access port as defined in claim 9, wherein the identification feature further identifies one or more of:

the access port lot number, a hospital identification, and the access port brand.

11. The access port as defined in claim 1, wherein the substrate material comprises a woven material, and wherein the port base is insert molded over the substrate.

12. The access port as defined in claim 11, wherein the substrate is removed after the molding process is complete.

13. The access port as defined in claim 12, wherein the substrate includes flaps or flanges extending from the outer perimeter to facilitate separation of the substrate from the port.

14. A power injectable access port, comprising:

a port base defining a fluid cavity, the port base formed from a base material;

a substrate separate from the port base formed from a substrate material, the substrate material being the same as the base material

a radiopaque material deposited on a surface of the substrate, the radiopaque material including a feature identifying the access port as power injectable,

wherein the substrate is coupled to the port base such that;

the radiopaque material is encapsulated between the substrate material and the base material; and

the feature identifying the access port as power injectable is visible through the substrate prior to implantation.

15. The power injectable access port as defined in claim 14, further comprising a port cap positioned over the port base to capture a septum therebetween.

16. The power injectable access port as defined in claim 14, wherein the radiopaque material comprises a metallic powder intermixed with a marking ink.

17. The power injectable access port as defined in claim 14, wherein the radiopaque material is included on a raised surface of the substrate.

18. The power injectable access port as defined in claim 14, wherein the radiopaque material is deposited on the surface of the substrate via a process selected from the group consisting of pad printing, manual painting, automatic painting, and silk screening.

19. The power injectable access port as defined in claim 14, wherein the substrate has a thickness in the range from about 0.002 inch to about 01015 inch.
