Abstract

Methods and systems for providing data communication in medical systems are disclosed.

Claims

1. A glucose monitoring device, comprising:

a memory;

a data processing section operatively coupled to the memory, wherein the data Processing section is configured to;

establish a communication range with a remote device when the remote device is positioned within a predetermined distance from the data processing section; and

determine when a glucose sensor is transcutaneously positioned and initialized, and based on the determination, transition a status identifier stored in the memory from a first state to a second state; and

a communication module operatively coupled to the data processing section and configured to communicate the status identifier to the remote device when the remote device is placed within the established communication range.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein the status identifier is used to verify the Transcutaneous positioning or initialization of the glucose sensor.

3. The device of claim 1, wherein the status identifier is associated with a sensor connection status or a sensor removal status.

4. The device of claim 1, wherein the transition of the status identifier from the first state to the second state activates a power up or a power down routine.

5. The device of claim 1, wherein the transition of the status identifier from the first state to the second state corresponds to the transcutaneous positioning or initialization of the glucose sensor, and triggers a power up routine.

6. The device of claim 1, wherein the transition of the status identifier from the first state to the second state corresponds to a detection of a sensor removal, and triggers a power down routine.

7. The device of claim 1, wherein the data processing section is further configured to retrieve a sensor parameter data stored in the memory.

8. The device of claim 7, wherein the sensor parameter data includes sensor sensitivity information.

9. The device of claim 1, wherein the glucose sensor includes a plurality of electrodes including a working electrode, wherein the working electrode comprises a glucose-responsive enzyme and a mediator, wherein at least one of the glucose-responsive enzyme and the mediator is chemically bonded to a polymer disposed on the working electrode, and wherein at least one of the glucose-responsive enzyme and the mediator is crosslinked with the polymer.

10. A method, comprising:

establishing a communication range between a remote device and a glucose monitoring device when the remote device is positioned within a predetermined distance from the glucose monitoring device;

determining, using a data processing section of the glucose monitoring device, when a glucose sensor is transcutaneously positioned or initialized, and based on the determination, transitioning a status identifier stored in a memory of the glucose monitoring device from a first state to a second state; and

communicating the status identifier to the remote device when the remote device is positioned within the communication range using a communication module of the glucose monitoring device.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the status identifier is used to verify the transcutaneous positioning or initialization of the glucose sensor.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein the status identifier is associated with a sensor connection status or a sensor removal status.

13. The method of claim 10, wherein transitioning of the status identifier from the first state to the second state activates a power up or a power down routine.

14. The method of claim 10, wherein transitioning of the status identifier from the first state to the second state corresponds to the transcutaneous positioning or initialization of the glucose sensor, and triggers a power up routine.

15. The method of claim 10, wherein transitioning of the status identifier from the first state to the second state corresponds to a detection of a sensor removal, and triggers a power down routine.

16. The method of claim 10, further comprising retrieving a sensor parameter data stored in the memory.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the sensor parameter data includes sensor sensitivity information.

18. The method of claim 10, wherein the glucose sensor includes a plurality of electrodes including a working electrode, wherein the working electrode comprises a glucose-responsive enzyme and a mediator, wherein at least one of the glucose-responsive enzyme and the mediator is chemically bonded to a polymer disposed on the working electrode, and wherein at least one of the glucose-responsive enzyme and the mediator is crosslinked with the polymer.

19. A system, comprising:

a remote device; and

a glucose monitoring device comprising;

a memory;

a data processing section operatively coupled to the memory, wherein the data processing section is configured to;

establish a communication range with the remote device when the remote device is positioned within a predetermined distance from the data processing section; and

determine when a glucose sensor is transcutaneously positioned and initialized, and based on the determination, transition a status identifier stored in the memory from a first state to a second state; and

a communication module operatively coupled to the data processing section and configured to communicate the status identifier to the remote device when the remote device is placed within the established communication range.

20. The system of claim 19, wherein the glucose sensor includes a plurality of electrodes including a working electrode, wherein the working electrode comprises a glucose-responsive enzyme and a mediator, wherein at least one of the glucose-responsive enzyme and the mediator is chemically bonded to a polymer disposed on the working electrode, and wherein at least one of the glucose-responsive enzyme and the mediator is crosslinked with the polymer.
