Abstract

An occluder, and methods for occlusion, that employs first and second opposed occluding members associated with each other, a tube contacting member connected to, or comprising at least a portion of, at least one of the first and second occluding members, and a force actuator constructed and positioned to apply a force to at least one of the first and second occluding members. Application of the force by the force actuator may cause the tube contacting member to move between a tube occluding and an open position. A release member may be configured and positioned to enable an operator to manually move the tube contacting member from the tube occluding position to the open position even with no force applied to the at least one of the first and second occluding members by the force actuator. In one embodiment, the force actuator may apply a force sufficient to bend both the first and second occluding members, so that upon application of the force by the force actuator (such as an air bladder), the first and second occluding members (e.g., spring plates pivotally connected at opposite ends) bend and the tube contacting member may move between the tube occluding and the open position.

Claims

1. An automated peritoneal dialysis system comprising:

a reusable cycler that is constructed and arranged for coupling to a disposable fluid handling cassette containing at least one pumping chamber, wherein

the disposable fluid handling cassette is configured to be connected in fluid communication with a peritoneum of a patient via a first collapsible tube and with a second source and/or destination via a second collapsible tube; and

an occluder configured and positioned within the cycler to selectively occlude the first collapsible tube while not occluding the second collapsible tube,

wherein the occluder comprises;

first and second opposed occluding members comprising spring plates pivotally connected together at opposite first and second ends;

a tube contacting member connected to, or comprising at least a portion of, at least one of the first and second occluding members; and

a single force actuator constructed and positioned to apply a force sufficient to bend both the first and second occluding members,

wherein upon application of the force by the force actuator to bend the first and second occluding members, the tube contacting member moves between a tube occluding and an open position.

2. The automated peritoneal dialysis system as recited in claim 1, wherein the occluder is configured to occlude a plurality of collapsible tubes.

3. The automated peritoneal dialysis system as recited in claim 2, wherein the disposable fluid handling cassette comprises a generally planar body having the at least one pumping chamber formed as a depression in a first side of the body and a plurality of flowpaths for a fluid;

a patient line port located at a first end of the body arranged for connection to the first collapsible tube, the patient line port being in fluid communication with the at least one pumping chamber via a first flowpath; and

a solution line port located at a second end of the body opposite the first end, and arranged for connection to the second collapsible tube, the solution line port being in fluid communication with the at least one pumping chamber via the first flowpath.

The automated peritoneal dialysis system as recited in claim 3, wherein the fluid handling cassette further comprises a patient drain line port located at the first end of the body arranged for connection to a third collapsible tube, the patient drain line port being in fluid communication with the at least one pumping chamber via a second flowpath, and wherein the occluder is configured and positioned within the cycler to selectively occlude the first and third collapsible tubes while not occluding the second collapsible tube.

The automated peritoneal dialysis system as recited in claim 4, wherein the fluid handling cassette comprises a plurality of solution line ports, each located at the second end of the body opposite the first end, and each arranged for connection to a collapsible tube of a plurality of collapsible tubes, each of the solution line ports being in fluid communication with the at least one pumping chamber via the first flowpath, and wherein the occluder is configured and positioned within the cycler to selectively occlude the first and third collapsible tubes while not occluding the plurality of collapsible tubes connected to the solution line ports.

6. The automated peritoneal dialysis system as recited in claim 1, wherein the occluder comprises:

a microprocessor based control system configured to control the force actuator; and

a release member configured and positioned to enable an operator to manually move the tube contacting member from the tube occluding position to the open position even with no force applied to the first and second occluding members by the force actuator.

The automated peritoneal dialysis system as recited in claim 1, wherein the tube contacting member comprises a pinch head connected to the spring plates at the first ends and wherein the second ends of the spring plates are affixed directly or indirectly to a housing to which the occluder is connected.

8. The automated peritoneal dialysis system as recited in claim 1, wherein the force actuator is controlled by a microprocessor based control system.

9. The automated peritoneal dialysis system as recited in claim 1, wherein the force actuator comprises an inflatable bladder positioned between the first and second occluding members.

The automated peritoneal dialysis system as recited in claim 1, wherein the application of the force by the force actuator moves the tube contacting member from the tube occluding position to the open position that allows flow between the peritoneum of the patient and the at least one pumping chamber.

11. The automated peritoneal dialysis system as recited in claim 1, wherein the reusable cycler comprises a door.

12. The automated peritoneal dialysis system as recited in claim 11, wherein the door comprises a guide for the first collapsible tube.

13. The automated peritoneal dialysis system as recited in claim 11, wherein the door comprises an occluder stop to aid in occluding the first collapsible tube.
