1. A non-transitory machine-readable storage medium, having encoded thereon an app for a smartphone or another mobile computer device that when executed by the smartphone or other mobile computer device that is separate from footwear of a user of the smartphone or other mobile computer device causes the device to actively control, by a wired or wireless connection, a configuration of:

  • one or more footwear structural elements located in a footwear sole or a removable inner sole insert of both shoes or other footwear of the device user, andone or more sensors located in either one or both of the sole or the removable inner sole insert of both the shoes or other footwear of the device user and at least one sensor including a gyroscope and/or an accelerometer in the device; and

    the one or more footwear structural elements being configured for computer control by the device when the app is operating on the device; and

    wherein instructions of the app, when executed, also cause the device to;

    first, process measurement data received from the one or more sensors located in either one or both of the sole or the removable inner sole insert and from the at least one sensor in the device, andsecond, use the processed measurement data to alter a configuration of the one or more footwear structural elements.
