Abstract

The present invention provides a closed-loop system for treating neurological disorders, such as epilepsy. In one embodiment the system comprises an input assembly that is adapted to receive one or more signals from a patient that are indicative of a patient'"'"'s neurological state. The input assembly processes the one or more signals to generate one or more control input signals. An output assembly receives the one or more control input signals from the input assembly and generate a neuromodulation signal that is a function of the patient'"'"'s neurological state. An electrode array is configured to deliver the neuromodulation signal to a patient'"'"'s peripheral nerve, such as the vagus nerve.

Claims

1. A system for vagus nerve stimulation of a patient, the system comprising:

an accelerometer configured to provide patient motion signals;

an input assembly adapted to receive the patient motion signals, the input assembly including an acceleration-based disease state estimator configured to primarily use the patient motion signals to generate a disease state estimate of the patient, the input assembly further adapted to process the patient motion signals to generate one or more control input signals;

an output assembly adapted to receive the one or more control input signals from the input assembly and generate a neuromodulation signal based at least in part on a comparison of the disease state estimate and a reference input corresponding to a target disease state; and

an electrode configured to deliver the neuromodulation signal to the patient'"'"'s vagus nerve.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the output assembly further comprises:

a control circuit adapted to receive the one or more control input signals from the input assembly and generate a control output; and

an output stage circuit adapted to receive the control output and generate the neuromodulation signal.

3. The system of claim 2 wherein the control circuit comprises at least one control law to generate the control output.

4. The system of claim 3 wherein the control law comprises at least one of a proportional, proportional-derivative type, proportional-integral, proportional-integral-derivative, non-linear, sliding, adaptive, sliding, model reference, piecewise-linear, and time varying control law.

5. The system of claim 1 wherein the neuromodulation signal is configured to maintain the patient'"'"'s disease state within a desired range.

6. The system of claim 1 wherein the neuromodulation signal is configured to maintain the patient'"'"'s disease state outside of a critical range.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein the neuromodulation signal is configured to control neural chaos.

8. The system of claim 1 wherein the neuromodulation signal is configured to control synchronization of neural chaos.

9. The system of claim 1 wherein the neuromodulation signal is configured to control neural entrainment.

10. The system of claim 1 wherein the neuromodulation signal is configured to control neural disentrainment.

11. The system of claim 1 wherein the neuromodulation signal is configured to prevent seizure onset.

12. The system of claim 1 wherein the neuromodulation signal is configured to reduce seizure intensity.

13. The system of claim 1 wherein the neuromodulation signal is configured to reduce seizure duration.

14. The system of claim 1 wherein the accelerometer is within an enclosure configured for attachment to the skin of the patient'"'"'s torso.

15. The system of claim 1 wherein the accelerometer is configured to sense movement of the patient'"'"'s torso.

16. The system of claim 15 wherein the accelerometer is configured to sense patient respiration.

17. The system of claim 1 wherein the accelerometer is one of a plurality of accelerometers.
