Abstract

A barrier element for protecting a vehicle door interior panel of a vehicle door from an occupant of an adjacent vehicle seat comprises a body and an arm rest portion. The body is shaped to enclose the vehicle door interior panel and to block the occupant'"'"'s access to an interior door handle, a lock control and a window control. The body has a self-supporting shape and is configured to cover the vehicle door interior panel. The arm rest portion is formed in the body and projects away from a surrounding surface of the body. The arm rest portion defines a self-supporting shape that follows contours of an arm rest of the interior vehicle door panel and provides an arm rest surface upon which an arm can be rested. The barrier element is securable to the vehicle door with fasteners that are positioned to be inaccessible to the occupant.

Claims

1. A barrier element for protecting a law enforcement vehicle door interior panel from an occupant of an adjacent vehicle seat, comprising:

a body having sufficient thickness to have a nondeformable shape and to provide impact resistance, the body being shaped to enclose the vehicle door interior panel and to block the occupant'"'"'s access to an interior door handle, a lock control and a window control of an associated vehicle door, wherein the body is configured to cover the vehicle door interior panel from its top extent to its bottom extent and from its forward extent to its rear extent, the body comprising a main surface and adjoining side surfaces,

wherein the barrier element is securable to the vehicle door at locations that are positioned away from the main surface of the body to be inaccessible to the occupant, thereby resisting efforts by the occupant to tamper with the vehicle door or the vehicle door interior panel and resisting damage to the vehicle door interior panel from occupant strikes to the barrier element.

2. The barrier element of claim 1, wherein the barrier element is formed as a single piece.

3. The barrier element of claim 1, wherein the barrier element is made of vacuum formed plastic.

4. The barrier element of claim 1, wherein the barrier element is shaped to cover at least one recess in the vehicle door interior panel when secured to the vehicle door or vehicle door interior panel, the barrier element thereby preventing the occupant from depositing contraband in the recess.

5. The barrier element of claim 4, wherein the barrier element comprises a planar or a convex surface in the area of the recess in the door interior panel.

6. The barrier element of claim 1, wherein the barrier element has an easy to clean construction allowing a user to clean debris and bodily substances from the barrier element.

7. The barrier element of claim 1, wherein the barrier element is configured to be secured to the vehicle door with fasteners extending through at least one of a forward side surface, a rear side surface and a bottom side surface.

8. The barrier element of claim 1, wherein the barrier element is configured to be secured to the vehicle door by fasteners that are inaccessible when the vehicle door is in a closed position.

The barrier element of claim 1, further comprising an arm rest portion formed in the body and projecting away from a surrounding surface of the body, the arm rest portion defining a self-supporting shape that follows contours of an arm rest of the interior vehicle door panel and provides an arm rest surface upon which an arm can be rested.

10. The barrier element of claim 9, wherein the arm rest portion protrudes from the surrounding surface of the body in a direction toward an interior of the vehicle relative to an installed position of the barrier element.

11. The barrier element of claim 1, wherein the barrier element is formed from steel.

12. The barrier element of claim 1, wherein the body is smoothly contoured.

13. The barrier element of claim 1, wherein the body is formed of a single piece of material that is impervious to liquids, thereby protecting the vehicle door interior panel from damage and permitting the barrier element to be wiped clean.

14. The barrier element of claim 1, wherein the body is shaped to enclose the vehicle door interior panel.

15. The barrier element of claim 1, wherein the barrier element is constructed to be resilient to strikes from the occupant.

16. The barrier element of claim 1, wherein the interior door handle remains mechanically connected, and the lock control and the window control remain electrically connected, when the barrier element is in position over the vehicle door interior panel.

17. A method of protecting a law enforcement vehicle door interior panel from an occupant of an adjacent vehicle seat, using the barrier element of claim 1, comprising:

providing the barrier element having the body shaped to enclose the vehicle door interior panel and to block the occupant'"'"'s access to the interior door handle, the lock control and the window control of the vehicle door, the body'"'"'s sufficient thickness such that the barrier element is non-deformable; and

securing the barrier element to the vehicle door with the fasteners that are positioned to be inaccessible to the occupant, thereby resisting efforts by the occupant to tamper with the vehicle door or the vehicle door interior panel and to damage the vehicle door interior panel by striking the barrier element.

18. The method of claim 17, further comprising covering at least one recess in the vehicle door interior panel with the barrier element.

19. The method of claim 17, wherein the act of securing the barrier element to the vehicle door with fasteners comprises positioning the fasteners to extend through side surfaces of the barrier element and into the vehicle door.

20. The method of claim 19, further comprising opening the vehicle door to expose a peripheral region around the vehicle door interior panel to access the fasteners.

21. The method of claim 17, further comprising providing an arm rest portion formed in the body and projecting away from a surrounding surface of the body, the arm rest portion defining a self-supporting shape that follows contours of an arm rest of the vehicle door interior panel and provides an arm rest surface upon which an arm can be rested.

22. The method of claim 17, wherein securing the barrier element to the vehicle door comprises maintaining the door handle, lock control and window control in their respective operational states.
