Abstract

This disclosure concerns an interactive head-mounted eyepiece with an integrated processor for handling content for display and an integrated image source for introducing the content to an optical assembly through which the user views a surrounding environment and the displayed content wherein the optical assembly comprises a photochromic layer and a heater layer disposed on a see-through lens of the optical assembly, wherein the photochromic layer is heated by the heater layer to accelerate its transition from dark to clear.

Claims

1. A system, comprising:

an interactive head-mounted display including an optical assembly through which displayed content and at least a portion of a surrounding environment are viewable, an integrated processor for handling content for display via the optical assembly, and an integrated image source for introducing the content to the optical assembly, wherein the optical assembly comprises a photochromic layer and a heater layer disposed on a see-through lens of the optical assembly, wherein the photochromic layer is configured to be heated by the heater layer to accelerate a transition from darker to less dark.

The system of claim 1, further comprising a camera, and wherein the integrated processor is configured to detect one or more of a hand gesture, a body movement, and an external cue via the camera, and provide a command to the heater layer based upon the one or more of the hand gesture, the body movement, and the external cue.

3. The system of claim 1, further comprising an accelerometer, wherein the integrated processor is configured to detect via the accelerometer a head movement and provide a command to the heater layer based on the head movement.

4. The system of claim 1, further comprising a microphone, wherein the integrated processor is configured to detect via the microphone an audio input and provide a command to the heater layer based on the audio input.

5. The system of claim 1, further comprising an ambient light sensor, wherein the integrated processor is configured to detect via the ambient light sensor an ambient light level and provide a command to the heater layer based upon the ambient light level.

6. The system of claim 1, further comprising an eye gaze detection system, wherein the integrated processor is configured to detect via the eye gaze detection system a gaze input and provide a command to the heater layer based on the gaze input.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein the heater layer comprises a transparent indium tin oxide heater.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the heater layer is configured to heat the photochromic layer based upon an ambient temperature.

9. The system of claim 1, further comprising a carrier layer, wherein the photochromic layer is applied to the carrier layer, and wherein a speed of the transition from darker to less dark is based on a thickness of the carrier layer.

10. A system, comprising:

an interactive head-mounted display including an optical assembly through which displayed content and at least a portion of a surrounding environment are viewable, an integrated processor for handling content for display via the optical assembly, and an integrated image source for introducing the content to the optical assembly,

wherein the optical assembly comprises a photochromic layer applied to a carrier layer and a heater layer disposed on a see-through lens of the optical assembly, wherein the integrated processor is configured to control heating of the photochromic layer by the heater layer to accelerate a transition of the photochromic layer from darker to less dark, and wherein a speed of the transition is based on a thickness of the carrier layer.

The system of claim 10, further comprising a camera, and wherein the integrated processor is configured to detect one or more of a hand gesture, a body movement, and an external cue via the camera, and provide a command to the heater layer based upon the one or more of the hand gesture, the body movement, and the external cue.

12. The system of claim 10, further comprising an accelerometer, wherein the integrated processor is configured to detect via the accelerometer a head movement and provide a command to the heater layer based on the head movement.

13. The system of claim 10, further comprising a microphone, wherein the integrated processor is configured to detect via the microphone an audio input and provide a command to the heater layer based on the audio input.

14. The system of claim 10, further comprising an ambient light sensor, wherein the integrated processor is configured to detect via the ambient light sensor an ambient light level and provide a command to the heater layer based upon the ambient light level.

15. The system of claim 10, further comprising an eye gaze detection system, wherein the integrated processor is configured to detect via the eye gaze detection system a gaze input and provide a command to the heater layer based on the gaze input.

16. The system of claim 10, wherein the heater layer comprises a transparent indium tin oxide heater.

17. The system of claim 10, wherein the heater layer is configured to heat the photochromic layer based upon an ambient temperature.

18. On an interactive head-mounted display device comprising an optical assembly through which displayed content and at least a portion of a surrounding environment are viewable, an integrated processor for handling content for display via the optical assembly, an integrated image source for introducing the content to the optical assembly, a sensor, and a photochromic layer and a heater layer disposed on a see-through lens of the optical assembly, a method comprising:

receiving an input from the sensor;

processing the input via the integrated processor to determine a command; and

heating the photochromic layer via the heater layer based upon the command to accelerate a transition of the photochromic layer from darker to less dark.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the sensor comprises an image sensor configured to acquire image data, and wherein the input comprises one or more of a hand gesture, a body movement, and an external cue detected by the integrated processor from the image data.

20. The method of claim 18, wherein the sensor comprises an accelerometer, and wherein the input comprises a head movement detected via the accelerometer.
