1. A portable electronic device, comprising:

  • a proximity-sensing user interface configured to capture position information and distance information, the distance information being indicative of a distance at which a user'"'"'s skin is positioned from a surface of the proximity-sensing user interface; and

    a controller coupled to the proximity-sensing user interface, the controller being configured to;

    process first distance information captured by the proximity-sensing user interface during a physical touch input, to determine whether a material layer is interposed between the user'"'"'s skin and the proximity-sensing user interface in the physical touch input,selectively set an input mode from a first input mode to a second input mode in response to the first distance information indicating that no material layer is interposed between the user'"'"'s skin and the proximity-sensing user interface in the physical touch input; and

    selectively maintain the first input mode active in response to the first distance information indicating that the material layer is interposed between the user'"'"'s skin and the proximity-sensing user interface.
