1. An electrosurgical device comprising:

  • a handle;

    a shaft member distal to the handle and having a distal end;

    a first elongate electrode having a side surface extending longitudinally along an axis to a first distal end, the first electrode having a first electrode tip surface adjacent to the first distal end, the first electrode tip surface being substantially flat;

    a second elongate electrode having a side surface extending longitudinally along the axis to a second distal end, the second electrode having a second electrode tip surface adjacent to the second distal end, the second electrode tip surface being substantially flat;

    the first and second electrodes being capable of treating tissue proximate the side surfaces, and distal to the distal end of the shaft member,the first electrode tip surface laterally spaced from the second electrode tip surface;

    an electrode sheath having a distal end, the electrode sheath being movable between an extended position which covers the side surfaces of the first and second electrodes and blocks tissue from coming near the side surfaces of the first and second electrodes but affords contact between the first and second electrode tip surfaces and tissue, and a retracted position that uncovers at least a portion of the elongated electrodes to allow tissue to come near the side surfaces of the first and second electrodes and be treated by the side surfaces of the first and second electrodes; and

    wherein when the electrode sheath is in the extended position, the first and second electrode tips project beyond the distal end of the electrode sheath.
