Abstract

A method is provided in one example embodiment and includes receiving a first data at a first network element; determining that the first data does not match an entry in an access control list; and sending a first message to a second network element that causes the second network element to enter into a low-power state. In yet another example embodiment, the method can include receiving a second data; determining that the second data matches an entry in the access control list; buffering the second data; sending a second message to the second network element, where the second message causes the second network element to exit the low-power state; and sending the buffered second data to the second network element.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

receiving, at a first network element, data for a second network element;

monitoring, at the first network element, a data rate of data that matches an entry in an access control list associated with the second network element;

when the first network element determines that the data rate of data matching an entry in the access control list associated with the second network element is below a data rate threshold, reducing a number of channels assigned to the second network element to cause the second network element to enter into a power saving state; and

while the second network element is in the power saving state, buffering, at the first network element, data matching an entry in the access control list for later delivery to the second network element.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

when the first network element determines that the data rate of data matching an entry in the access control list associated with the second network element is above the data rate threshold, increasing, by the first network element, the number of channels allocated to the second network element to cause the second network element to enter a mode sufficient for receiving data; and

sending the buffered data from the first network element to the second network element when the second network element enters the mode sufficient for receiving data.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

when the first network element determines that data does not match an entry in the access control list associated with the second network element for a predetermined amount of time, sending, by the first network element, a message to the second network element that causes the second network element to enter into a standby state.

4. The method of claim 3, further comprising, while the second network element is in the standby state:

discarding, by the first network element, data that does not match an entry in the access control list associated with the second network element; and

sending, by the first network element, a wake-up message to the second network element when data matches an entry in the access control list associated with the second network element, wherein the first network element buffers the data while the second network element exits the standby state.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the wake-up message is delivered when the second network element does not have an IP address.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the first network element is a cable modem termination system (CMTS), and the second network element is a cable modem (CM).

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the reduced number of channels includes one active downstream channel from the first network element to the second network element and no active upstream channels from the second network element to the first network element.

8. The method of claim 7, further comprising forwarding multicast traffic using the one active downstream channel.

9. The method of claim 4, wherein the first network element reduces the number of channels assigned to the second network element based on power-savings needs of the first network element.

10. The method of claim 1, further comprising discarding data that does not match an entry in the access control list associated with the second network element.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the first network element and the second network element include a same access control list associated with the second network element.

12. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving, by the first network element, data that the second network element buffered during the power saving state.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the first network element performs power saving operations for a plurality of network elements, wherein the first network element allocates the a number of channels assigned to the second network element based on a selected one of a group of parameters, the group consisting of:

a) a power savings capability for the network elements;

b) a current power savings mode for the network elements;

c) a tier of service associated with the network elements; and

d) a current congestion level on a network associated with the network elements.

14. A non-transitory media encoded with logic that includes instructions for execution, and when executed by a processor, is operable to perform operations comprising:

monitoring a data rate of data received at a first network element that matches an entry in an access control list associated with a second network element;

when the data rate of data matching an entry in the access control list associated with the second network element is below a data rate threshold, reducing a number of channels assigned to the second network element to cause the second network element to enter into a power saving state; and

while the second network element is in the power saving state, buffering data at the first network element that matches an entry in the access control list for later delivery to the second network element.

15. The non-transitory media of claim 14, further operable to perform operations comprising:

when the data rate of data matching an entry in the access control list associated with the second network element is above the data rate threshold, increasing the number of channels allocated to the second network element to cause the second network element to enter a mode sufficient for receiving data; and

sending the buffered data from the first network element to the second network element when the second network element enters the mode sufficient for receiving data.

16. The non-transitory media of claim 14, further operable to perform operations comprising:

when data does not match an entry in the access control list associated with the second network element for a predetermined amount of time, sending a message from the first network element to the second network element that causes the second network element to enter into a standby state.

17. The non-transitory media of claim 16, further operable to perform operations comprising, while the second network element is in the standby state:

discarding data that does not match an entry in the access control list associated with the second network element; and

sending a wake-up message from the first network element to the second network element when data matches an entry in the access control list associated with the second network element, wherein the first network element buffers the data while the second network element exits the standby state.

18. The non-transitory media of claim 14, wherein the first network element is a cable modem termination system (CMTS), and the second network element is a cable modem (CM).

19. The non-transitory media of claim 14, wherein the reduced number of channels includes one active downstream channel from the first network element to the second network element and no active upstream channels from the second network element to the first network element.

20. The non-transitory media of claim 14, wherein the number of channels assigned to the second network element is reduced based on power-savings needs of the first network element.

21. The non-transitory media of claim 14, further operable to perform operations comprising, discarding data that does not match an entry in the access control list associated with the second network element.

22. An apparatus, comprising:

an energy module configured to set a power saving state of a network element based on data destined for the network element, wherein the energy module includes a memory element for storing data and a processor configured to execute instructions associated with the data, such that the energy module is configured to;

receive data for the network element;

monitor a data rate of data that matches an entry in an access control list associated with the network element;

when the data rate of data matching an entry in the access control list associated with the network element is below a data rate threshold, reduce a number of channels assigned to the network element to cause the network element to enter into a power saving state; and

while the network element is in the power saving state, buffer data matching an entry in the access control list for later delivery to the network element.

23. The apparatus of claim 22, wherein the energy module is further configured to:

when the data rate of data matching an entry in the access control list associated with the network element is above the data rate threshold, increase the number of channels allocated to the network element to cause the network element to enter a mode sufficient for receiving data; and

send the buffered data to the network element when the network element enters the mode sufficient for receiving data.

24. The apparatus of claim 22, wherein the energy module is further configured to:

when data does not match an entry in the access control list associated with the network element for a predetermined amount of time, sending a message to the network element that causes the network element to enter into a standby state.

25. The apparatus of claim 24, wherein the energy module is further configured to, while the network element is in the standby state:

discard data that does not match an entry in the access control list associated with the network element; and

send a wake-up message to the network element when data matches an entry in the access control list associated with the network element, wherein the energy module buffers the data while the network element exits the standby state.

26. The apparatus of claim 22, wherein a cable modem termination system (CMTS) includes the energy module, and the network element is a cable modem, such that the CMTS sets a power saving state of the cable modem.
