Abstract

Various embodiments of methods and systems for improving and enhancing vision are disclosed. Adjustable lenses or optical systems may be used to provide adaptive vision modification. In some embodiments, vision modification may be responsive to the current state of the user'"'"'s visual system. Certain embodiments provide correction of the subject'"'"'s near and far vision. Other embodiments provide enhancement of vision beyond the physiological ranges of focal length or magnification.

Claims

1. A method of controlling a lens system, comprising:

receiving an image signal representing a time-varying image detected from an eye of a subject;

determining at least one image quality metric of said time-varying image from said image signal within at least one spectral waveband of finite width;

generating a lens system control signal based upon said at least one image quality metric;

sending said lens system control signal to an adjustable lens system to cause adjustment of said adjustable lens system in an adjustment direction determined to modify said at least one image quality metric toward a target image quality metric value; and

repeating said receiving, determining, generating and sending to provide ongoing vision modification.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein determining at least one image quality metric of said image includes detecting at least one landmark in said image.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein said at least one landmark is in the foveal region of said image.

4. The method of claim 2, wherein said at least one landmark is at least a portion of an optic nerve of said eye.

5. The method of claim 1, including determining multiple image quality metrics of said time-varying image from said image signal, wherein said image quality metrics are matched to attributes of optical aberrations correctible by said lens system.

6. The method of claim 1, including repeating said receiving, determining, generating, and sending at a rate faster than the intrinsic accommodation time of the lens of the eye.

7. The method of claim 1, including repeating said receiving, determining, generating, and sending at a rate faster than the visual pigment reversal-rate of the highest reversal-rate visual pigment found in the photoreceptors of said eye.

8. The method of claim 1, including repeating said receiving, determining, generating, and sending at least about once every 3 seconds.

9. The method of claim 1, including repeating said receiving, determining, generating, and sending at least about once per second.

10. The method of claim 1, including repeating said receiving, determining, generating, and sending at least about three times per second.

11. The method of claim 1, including repeat said receiving, determining, generating, and sending with an update rate of between about ⅓

Hz and about 10 Hz.

12. The method of claim 1, including repeat said receiving, determining, generating, and sending with an update rate of between about 1 Hz and about 10 Hz.

13. The method of claim 1, including repeat said receiving, determining, generating, and sending with an update rate of between about 1 Hz and about 3 Hz.

14. The method of claim 1, including determining said at least one image quality metric from a portion of said time-varying image detected from at least a portion of the fovea of the retina of said eye of said subject.

15. The method of claim 1, including detecting at least one feature in said time-varying image, and wherein said determining said at least one image quality metric includes determining a sharpness of said at least one feature.

16. The method of claim 1, wherein determining said image quality metric includes performing a spatial frequency analysis of at least a portion of said image signal within said at least one spectral waveband.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein said spatial frequency analysis includes at least one form of mathematical functional analysis.

18. The method of claim 17, in which said at least one form of mathematical functional analysis includes Fourier transformation analysis.

19. The method of claim 18 wherein said Fourier transformation analysis includes determining a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT).

20. The method of claim 17, comprising determining a peak spatial frequency content of said image signal.

21. The method of claim 1, wherein said image signal represents a time-varying image detected from a first position in said eye of said subject, and wherein determining said image quality metric of said image signal comprises comparing said image signal with at least one reference image signal.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein said at least one reference image signal corresponds to an at least one image detected from a different spacetime location than the location corresponding to said image signal.

23. The method of claim 21, wherein said at least one reference image signal comprises at least one previous instance of said image signal.

24. The method of claim 23, including determining at least one image quality metric of said previous instance of said image signal and comparing said at least one image quality metric of said image signal to said at least one image quality metric of said reference signal.

25. The method of claim 24, further including generating a lens system control signal to adjust said lens system in the opposite direction of an immediately preceding lens system adjustment if said at least one image quality metric of said reference signal is closer to said target image quality metric value than said at least one image quality metric of said image signal.

26. The method of claim 24, further including generating a lens system control signal to adjust said lens system in the same direction as an immediately preceding lens system adjustment if said at least one image quality metric of said reference signal is further from said target image quality metric value than said at least one image quality metric of said image signal.

27. The method of claim 1, wherein generating said lens system control signal includes determining a transfer function representing the optical system of said eye of said subject over a visible spectral waveband and a field-of-view centered on the fovea of said eye.

28. A system for modifying the vision of a subject, comprising:

an adjustable optical system adapted to modify a time-varying input image impinging on the retina of an eye of the subject;

an image detector adapted to detect a time-varying image reflected from the retina;

an image analyzer operatively coupled to said image detector and for determining the quality of said reflected image through comparison of a determined characteristic of said reflected image with an expected characteristic of said reflected image; and

a controller operably coupled to said adjustable optical system and configured to provide ongoing control of said adjustable optical system by adjusting said adjustable optical system at intervals responsive to said quality of said reflected image.

29. The system of claim 28, further comprising:

a wearable mounting for positioning said adjustable optical system with respect to said eye.

30. The system of claim 28, wherein said controller controls adjustment of a spherical focal length of said adjustable lens system.

31. The system of claim 28, wherein said controller controls at least one component of a cylindrical focus of said adjustable lens system.

32. The system of claim 28, wherein said controller controls the transmissivity of said adjustable lens system over at least one visible spectral waveband.

33. The system of claim 28, wherein said controller controls the effective aperture of at least one component of said adjustable lens system.

34. The system of claim 28, wherein said controller controls at least one chromatic aberration-correcting feature of said adjustable lens system.

35. The system of claim 28, wherein said controller controls an angle of orientation of at least one optical element of said adjustable lens system relative to the optical axis of said eye.

36. The system of claim 28, wherein said controller controls a transverse position of at least one optical element of said adjustable lens system relative to the optical axis of said eye.

37. The system of claim 28, wherein said adjustable optical system is adjusted faster than the intrinsic accommodation time of the lens of said eye.

38. The system of claim 28, wherein said controller is configured to generate a control signal for updating the setting of said adjustable optical system at a preset update rate.

39. The system of claim 38, wherein said controller is configured to control said update rate with a timer chip.

40. The system of claim 38, wherein said controller is configured to control said update rate with a software loop.

41. The system of claim 38, wherein said controller is configured to control said update rate under hardware control.

42. The system of claim 28, including a second image detector adapted to detect a reference image.

43. The system of claim 28, wherein said controller is configured to adjust said adjustable optical system at a rate faster than at least one of the intrinsic accommodation time of the lens of said eye or the visual pigment reversal-rate of the highest reversal-rate visual pigment present in the photoreceptors of said eye.

44. A system for providing adaptive vision modification, comprising:

an image detector for detecting a time-varying image reflected from at least a portion of a retina of an eye of a subject;

an image analyzer operatively coupled to said image detector and configured to determine the quality of said detected image through comparison of a characteristic of said time-varying image with an expected characteristic of said time-varying image;

an image modulator for modulating a time-varying input image impinging on at least a portion of said retina; and

a modulation controller configured to receive data representative of said quality of said detected image from said image analyzer and operatively coupled to said image modulator to provide ongoing control of said image modulator in response to said quality of said detected image.

45. The system of claim 44, further comprising a wearable mounting for positioning said image detector and said image modulator with respect to said eye of said subject.

46. The system of claim 44, wherein said image modulator is adapted to modify the focal length of said time-varying input image.

47. The system of claim 44, wherein said image modulator is adapted to modify the magnification of said time-varying input image.

48. The system of claim 44, wherein said image modulator is adapted to modify one or more cylindrical focal properties including at least one of focal length or axis-of-orientation of said time-varying input image.

49. The system of claim 44, wherein said image modulator includes an adjustable optical system.

50. The system of claim 44, wherein said image modulator includes a camera and a display.

51. The system of claim 44, wherein said image modulator is adapted to modulate the spectral content of said time-varying input image.

52. The system of claim 44, wherein said image modulator is adapted to modulate the spatial frequency content of said time-varying input image.

53. The system of claim 44, wherein said image modulator is adapted to modulate the intensity of said input image in a spectral wavelength-dependent fashion.

54. The system of claim 44, wherein said image modulator is adapted to correct a chromatic aberration of said time-varying input image.
