Abstract

Search terms are derived automatically from images captured by a camera equipped cell phone, PDA, or other image capturing device, submitted to a search engine to obtain information of interest, and at least a portion of the resulting information is transmitted back locally to, or nearby, the device that captured the image.

Claims

1. A recognition system comprising:

a portable device sensor configured to capture a digital representation of a gesture; and

a portable recognition device coupled with the portable device sensor and configured to;

acquire the digital representation of the gesture from the portable device sensor;

recognize the gesture as a target object from the digital representation;

translate target object information associated with the target object into machine understandable data associated with the gesture; and

input the machine understandable data, via an address, into a second device.

2. The system of claim 1, further comprising a database of potential matches from which the target object is recognized.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the second device comprises a vending machine.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the second device comprises a television.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the second device comprises a search engine.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the second device comprises a computer.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein the second device is the portable recognition device.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the machine understandable data comprises interactive data.

9. The system of claim 8, wherein the interactive data comprises a menu of options.

10. The system of claim 8, wherein the interactive data comprises user selectable options.

11. The system of claim 1, wherein the machine understandable data is configured to cause the second device to perform an action.

12. The system of claim 11, wherein the action includes at least one of the following:

a transaction with an account, a changing of a channel, a dispensing of a product, an accessing of a web site, a playing of an audio stream, and an interaction with a promotion.

13. The system of claim 11, wherein the action comprises an interaction with on-screen content.

14. The system of claim 13, wherein the on-screen content comprises television programming.

15. The system of claim 1, wherein the machine understandable data comprises text.

16. The system of claim 1, wherein the portable recognition device is further configured to recognize the gesture as the target object based on motion recognition.

17. The system of claim 1, wherein the portable recognition device is further configured to recognize the gesture as the target object based on a position.

18. The system of claim 1, wherein the portable recognition device is further configured to recognize the gesture as the target object based on an orientation.

19. The system of claim 1, wherein the portable recognition device is further configured to recognize the gesture as the target object based on a location.

20. The system of claim 1, wherein the portable recognition device is further configured to recognize the gesture as the target object based on a time.

21. The system of claim 1, wherein the digital representation comprises motion data.

22. The system of claim 21, wherein the digital representation comprises motion imagery.

23. The system of claim 1, wherein the digital representation comprises video data.

24. The system of claim 1, wherein the digital representation comprises a representation of an object that changes over time.

25. The system of claim 1, wherein the portable recognition device comprises the portable device sensor.

26. The system of claim 1, wherein the portable recognition device comprises a device configured to be held proximate to a hand.

27. The system of claim 1, wherein the portable recognition device comprises a cell phone.

28. The system of claim 1, wherein the portable recognition device comprises an assistant device configured to store personal data.

29. The system of claim 1, wherein the portable device sensor includes at least one camera.

30. The system of claim 29, wherein the portable device sensor includes multiple cameras.

31. The system of claim 1, wherein the portable recognition device is further configured to extract features from the digital representation.

32. The system of claim 31, wherein the portable recognition device is further configured to obtain the target object information based on the features.

33. The system of claim 1, wherein the portable recognition device is further configured to segment the digital representation into groups.

34. The system of claim 33, wherein the portable recognition device is further configured to recognize the gesture as the target object based on the groups.
