Abstract

A system and method of treating target tissue in a patient'"'"'s eye, which includes generating a light beam, deflecting the light beam using a scanner to form first and second treatment patterns, delivering the first treatment pattern to the target tissue to form an incision that provides access to an eye chamber of the patient'"'"'s eye, and delivering the second treatment pattern to the target tissue to form a relaxation incision along or near limbus tissue or along corneal tissue anterior to the limbus tissue of the patient'"'"'s eye to reduce astigmatism thereof.

Claims

1. A cataract surgery scanning system for treating target tissue in one or more of a cornea, limbus or sclera of a patient'"'"'s eye, comprising:

a treatment light source for generating a treatment light beam;

a scanner for deflecting the light beam to form first and second treatment patterns of the treatment light beam under the control of a controller; and

a delivery system comprising the controller operatively coupled to the treatment light source and the scanner, and programmed to;

(i) deliver the first treatment pattern to a first target tissue selected from the group consisting of the cornea, limbus and sclera of the patient'"'"'s eye to form a cataract incision therein that provides access to an eye chamber of the patient'"'"'s eye, the incision to be formed by delivering the first treatment pattern only partially extending through the target tissue, and (ii) deliver the second treatment pattern to a second target tissue to form a relaxation incision along or near limbus tissue, or along corneal tissue-of the patient'"'"'s eye.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the scanner and the controller are configured to combine the first and second treatment patterns into a single treatment pattern for forming both the cataract incision and the relaxation incision.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the treatment light source, the scanner, and the controller are configured such that the relaxation incision formed by the second treatment pattern only partially extends through the target tissue.

4. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

a profilometer for measuring a surface profile of a surface of the cornea of the patient'"'"'s eye, wherein the controller controls the formation of the second treatment pattern by the scanner in response to the measured surface profile.

5. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

a detector for measuring scattering properties from different locations on the patient'"'"'s eye, wherein the controller controls the formation of at least one of the first and second treatment patterns by the scanner in response to the measured scattering properties.

The system of claim 1, further comprising an aiming light source for generating an aiming light beam, wherein the scanner is configured to deflect the aiming light beam to form an aiming pattern that is delivered to the target tissue and visually indicates a position of at least one of the first and second treatment patterns on the patient'"'"'s eye.

7. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

a camera for capturing an image of the target tissue;

a display device for displaying the captured image; and

a graphic user interface for modifying a composition and location of a least one of the first and second treatment patterns on the patient'"'"'s eye.

17. The system of claim 1, wherein the controller is programmed to deliver a third treatment pattern to the target tissue to form an additional incision in the corneal tissue that provides access to the eye chamber of the patient'"'"'s eye.

8. A cataract surgery scanning system for treating target tissue in one or more of a cornea, limbus or sclera of a patient'"'"'s eye, comprising:

a treatment light source for generating a treatment light beam;

a scanner for deflecting the treatment light beam to form first and second treatment patterns of the treatment light beam under the control of a controller;

an imaging system configured for imaging tissue of the patient'"'"'s eye; and

a delivery system comprising the controller operatively coupled to the treatment light source, the scanner, and the imaging system, and programmed to;

(i) operate the imaging system to acquire image data of the patient'"'"'s eye tissue;

(ii) deliver the first treatment pattern to a first target tissue selected from the group consisting of the cornea, limbus and sclera of the patient'"'"'s eye, based at least in part on the image data, so as to form a cataract incision therein sized to provide access to an eye chamber of the patient'"'"'s eye, the incision to be formed by delivering the first treatment pattern only partially extending through the first target tissue, and (iii) deliver the second treatment pattern to a second target tissue, based at least in part on the image data, so as to form a relaxation incision partially penetrating the target tissue, the relaxation incision to be formed along or near limbus tissue, or along corneal tissue of the patient'"'"'s eye.

9. The system of claim 8, further comprising:

a profilometer for measuring a surface profile of a surface of the cornea of the patient'"'"'s eye, wherein the controller controls the formation of the second treatment pattern by the scanner in response to the measured surface profile, and

a detector for measuring scattering properties from different locations on the patient'"'"'s eye, wherein the controller controls the formation of at least one of the first and second treatment patterns by the scanner in response to the measured scattering properties.

The system of claim 8, further comprising an aiming light source for generating an aiming light beam, wherein the scanner is configured to deflect the aiming light beam to form an aiming pattern that is delivered to the target tissue and visually indicates a position of at least one of the first and second treatment patterns on the patient'"'"'s eye.

11. The system of claim 8, further comprising:

a camera for capturing an image of the target tissue;

a display device for displaying the captured image; and

a graphic user interface for modifying a composition and location of a least one of the first and second treatment patterns on the patient'"'"'s eye.

12. A cataract surgery scanning system for treating target tissue in one or more of a cornea, limbus or sclera of a patient'"'"'s eye, comprising:

a treatment light source for generating a treatment light beam;

a scanner for deflecting the light beam to form first and second treatment patterns of the treatment light beam under the control of a controller;

a profilometer configured for measuring a surface profile of a surface of the cornea of the patient'"'"'s eye, wherein the controller controls the formation of the second treatment pattern by the scanner in response to the measured surface profile;

a detector configured for measuring scattering properties from different locations on the patient'"'"'s eye;

wherein the controller controls the formation of at least one of the first and second treatment patterns by the scanner in response to the measured scattering properties; and

a delivery system comprising the controller operatively coupled to the treatment light source, the scanner, the profilometer, and the detector, and programmed to;

(i) operate the profilometer to measure a surface profile of a surface of the cornea of the patient'"'"'s eye;

(ii) operate the detector to measure scattering properties from locations on the patient'"'"'s eye;

(iii) deliver the first treatment pattern to a first target tissue selected from the group consisting of the cornea, limbus and sclera of the patient'"'"'s eye to form a cataract incision therein that provides access to an eye chamber of the patient'"'"'s eye, the incision to be formed by delivering the first treatment pattern only partially extending through the first target tissue, and (iv) deliver the second treatment pattern to a second target tissue to form a relaxation incision partially penetrating the target tissue, the relaxation incision to be formed along or near limbus tissue, or along corneal tissue of the patient'"'"'s eye.

13. The system of claim 12, wherein the scanner and the controller are configured to combine the first and second treatment patterns into a single treatment pattern for forming both the cataract incision and the relaxation incision.

14. The system of claim 12, wherein the treatment light source, the scanner, and the controller are configured such that the cataract incision formed by the first treatment pattern only partially extends through the target tissue.

The system of claim 12, further comprising an aiming light source for generating an aiming light beam, wherein the scanner is configured to deflect the aiming light beam to form an aiming pattern that is delivered to the target tissue and visually indicates a position of at least one of the first and second treatment patterns on the patient'"'"'s eye.

16. The system of claim 12, further comprising:

a camera for capturing an image of the target tissue;

a display device for displaying the captured image; and

a graphic user interface for modifying a composition and location of a least one of the first and second treatment patterns on the patient'"'"'s eye.
