Abstract

A base station subsystem (BSS) and a method are described herein for improving an Access Grant Channel (AGCH) capacity when mobile stations establish an uplink Temporary Block Flow (TBF) triggered by a small data transmission (SDT) or an instant message transmission (IMT). Plus, a mobile station (MS) and a method are described herein for improving the AGCH capacity when the mobile station establishes an uplink TBF triggered by a SDT or an IMT.

Claims

1. A base station subsystem (BSS) configured to interact with a plurality of mobile stations and perform a procedure to increase an Access Grant Channel (AGCH) capacity by minimizing an amount of mobile station specific information carried within an immediate assignment message, the BSS comprising:

a processor; and

a memory that stores processor-executable instructions where the processor interfaces with the memory and executes the processor-executable instructions to enable the following operations;

broadcast system information (SI) to the plurality of mobile stations, where the SI comprises at least an indicator which indicates to the plurality of mobile stations that the BSS is configured to perform the procedure;

in response to broadcasting the SI, receive at least one access request from at least one of the plurality of mobile stations, where the at least one mobile station is requesting to establish an uplink Temporary Block Flow (TBF) to transmit a small data transmission (SDT) or an instant message transmission (IMT);

in response to the received at least one access request, send an immediate assignment message on the AGCH for the at least one mobile station, where the immediate assignment message comprises at least a portion of static radio parameters and at least a portion of dynamic radio parameters which are to be used by the at least one mobile station when establishing the uplink TBF to transmit the SDT or IMT; and

send a remaining portion of the dynamic radio parameters in a message on a Packet Associated Control Channel (PACCH) to the at least one mobile station addressed by the immediate assignment message, where the remaining portion of the dynamic radio parameters are to be used by the at least one mobile station along with the at least a portion of static radio parameters and the at least a portion of dynamic radio parameters included in the immediate assignment message when establishing the uplink TBF to transmit the SDT or IMT.

2. The BSS of claim 1, further comprising a step of sending additional static radio parameters in a message on a Packet Associated Control Channel (PACCH) to the at least one mobile station addressed by the immediate assignment message.

3. The BSS of claim 1, wherein the static radio parameters comprise a radio assignment identity (RAID) value along with parameter values for following information elements (IEs):

a page mode;

a packet channel description;

a mobile allocation;

a starting time; and

Immediate Assignment (IA) rest octets.

The BSS of claim 1, wherein the immediate assignment message comprises a code point indicating an enhanced immediate assignment (EIA) message that includes an EIA Rest Octets Information Element (IE) which contains at least a portion of dynamic radio parameters for each of the at least one mobile station.

5. The BSS of claim 1, wherein the immediate assignment message further includes a packet channel description for each of the at least one mobile station.

15. The BSS of claim 1, wherein the SI further comprises mobile allocation information, and the immediate assignment message has a bit to indicate that no mobile allocation information is included within the immediate assignment message.

16. The BSS of claim 1, wherein each of the at least one access request comprises:

bits corresponding to a one phase access for an optimized system access procedure request;

bits corresponding to signalling for the optimized system access procedure request;

bits corresponding to a single block packet access for the optimized system access procedure request; and

bits corresponding to a two phase access for the optimized system access procedure request.

The BSS of claim 1, wherein the immediate assignment message and the message on the PACCH both comprise a message reference identification which enables each one of the at least one mobile station to precisely associate the received message on the PACCH to the received immediate assignment message.

18. The BSS of claim 1, wherein the immediate assignment message is configured to address a maximum of eight mobile stations and contains at least the following content:

Page Mode;

Implicit Reject Circuit Switched;

Implicit Reject Packet Switched;

Message Reference Identifier;

Packet Channel Description;

Mobile Allocation, wherein one bit indicates that no mobile allocation is included in the immediate assignment message; and

Frame Number Information Length; and

for each addressed mobile station at least the following content;

Frame Number Information;

Random Bits; and

Mobile Station Identifier Discriminator.

19. The BSS of claim 1, wherein the immediate assignment message is configured to address a maximum of six mobile stations and contains at least the following content:

Page Mode;

Implicit Reject Circuit Switched;

Implicit Reject Packet Switched;

Message Reference Identifier;

Packet Channel Description;

Mobile Allocation, wherein multiple bits indicate the mobile allocation; and

Frame Number Information Length; and

for each addressed mobile station at least the following content;

Frame Number Information;

Random Bits; and

Mobile Station Identifier Discriminator.

6. A method implemented by a base station subsystem (BSS), which interacts with a plurality of mobile stations, for performing a procedure to increase an Access Grant Channel (AGCH) capacity by minimizing an amount of mobile station specific information carried within an immediate assignment message, the method comprising:

broadcasting system information (SI) to the plurality of mobile stations, where the SI comprises at least an indicator which indicates to the plurality of mobile stations that the BSS is configured to perform the procedure;

in response to broadcasting the SI, receiving at least one access request from at least one of the plurality of mobile stations, where the at least one mobile station is requesting to establish an uplink Temporary Block Flow, TBF, to transmit a small data transmission (SDT) or an instant message transmission (IMT);

in response to the received at least one access requests, sending an immediate assignment message on the AGCH for the at least one mobile station, where the immediate assignment message comprises at least a portion of static radio parameters and at least a portion of dynamic radio parameters which are to be used by the at least one mobile station when establishing the uplink TBF to transmit the SDT or IMT; and

sending a remaining portion of the dynamic radio parameters in a message on a Packet Associated Control Channel (PACCH) to the at least one mobile station addressed by the immediate assignment message, where the remaining portion of the dynamic radio parameters are to be used by the at least one mobile station along with the at least a portion of static radio parameters and the at least a portion of dynamic radio parameters included in the immediate assignment message when establishing the uplink TBF to transmit the SDT or IMT.

7. The method of claim 6, further comprising:

sending additional static radio parameters in a message on a Packet Associated Control Channel (PACCH) to the at least one mobile station addressed by the immediate assignment message.

8. The method of claim 6, wherein the static radio parameters comprise a radio assignment identity (RAID) value along with parameter values for following information elements (IEs):

a page mode;

a packet channel description;

a mobile allocation;

a starting time; and

Immediate Assignment (IA) rest octets.

The method of claim 6, wherein the immediate assignment message comprises a code point indicating an enhanced immediate assignment (EIA) message that includes an EIA Rest Octets Information Element (IE) which contains at least a portion of dynamic radio parameters for each of the at least one mobile station.

10. The method of claim 6, wherein the immediate assignment message further includes a packet channel description for each of the at least one mobile station.

20. The method of claim 6, wherein the SI further comprises mobile allocation information, and the immediate assignment message has a bit to indicate that no mobile allocation information is included within the immediate assignment message.

21. The method of claim 6, wherein each of the at least one access request comprises:

bits corresponding to a one phase access for an optimized system access procedure request;

bits corresponding to signalling for the optimized system access procedure request;

bits corresponding to a single block packet access for the optimized system access procedure request; and

bits corresponding to a two phase access for the optimized system access procedure request.

22. The method of claim 6, wherein the immediate assignment message and the message on the PACCH both comprise a message reference identification which enables each one of the at least one mobile station to precisely associate the received message on the PACCH to the received immediate assignment message.

23. The method of claim 6, wherein the immediate assignment message is configured to address a maximum of eight mobile stations and contains at least the following content:

Page Mode;

Implicit Reject Circuit Switched;

Implicit Reject Packet Switched;

Message Reference Identifier;

Packet Channel Description;

Mobile Allocation, wherein one bit indicates that no mobile allocation is included in the immediate assignment message; and

Frame Number Information Length; and

for each addressed mobile station at least the following content;

Frame Number Information;

Random Bits; and

Mobile Station Identifier Discriminator.

24. The method of claim 6, wherein the immediate assignment message is configured to address a maximum of six mobile stations and contains at least the following content:

Page Mode;

Implicit Reject Circuit Switched;

Implicit Reject Packet Switched;

Message Reference Identifier;

Packet Channel Description;

Mobile Allocation, wherein multiple bits indicate the mobile allocation; and

Frame Number Information Length; and

for each addressed mobile station at least the following content;

Frame Number Information;

Random Bits; and

Mobile Station Identifier Discriminator.

11. A mobile station configured to interact with a base station subsystem and to perform a procedure to increase an Access Grant Channel (AGCH) capacity by minimizing an amount of mobile station specific information carried within an immediate assignment message, the mobile station comprising:

a processor; and

a memory that stores processor-executable instructions where the processor interfaces with the memory and executes the processor-executable instructions to enable the following operations;

receive system information (SI) from the base station subsystem, where the SI comprises at least an indicator which indicates to the mobile station that the BSS is configured to perform the procedure;

after receiving the SI, send an access request to the base station subsystem, where the access request is sent when the mobile station is requesting to establish an uplink Temporary Block Flow (TBF) that is triggered by a small data transmission (SDT) or an instant message transmission (IMT);

in response to sending the access request, receive an immediate assignment message on the AGCH from the base station substation, where the immediate assignment message comprises at least a portion of static radio parameters and at least a portion of dynamic radio parameters;

receive a remaining portion of the dynamic radio parameters in a message on a Packet Associated Control Channel (PACCH) from the base station subsystem; and

use the at least a portion of static radio parameters, the at least a portion of dynamic radio parameters, and the remaining portion of the dynamic radio parameters when establishing the uplink TBF to transmit the SDT or IMT.

12. The mobile station of claim 11, wherein the processor further executes the processor-executable instructions to receive additional static radio parameters in a message on a Packet Associated Control Channel (PACCH).

25. The mobile station of claim 11, wherein the SI further comprises mobile allocation information, and the immediate assignment message has a bit to indicate that no mobile allocation information is included within the immediate assignment message.

26. The mobile station of claim 11, wherein each of the at least one access request comprises:

bits corresponding to a one phase access for an optimized system access procedure request;

bits corresponding to signalling for the optimized system access procedure request;

bits corresponding to a single block packet access for the optimized system access procedure request; and

bits corresponding to a two phase access for the optimized system access procedure request.

27. The mobile station of claim 11, wherein the immediate assignment message and the message on the PACCH both comprise a message reference identification which enables the mobile station to precisely associate the received message on the PACCH to the received immediate assignment message.

28. The mobile station of claim 11, wherein the immediate assignment message is configured to address a maximum of eight mobile stations and contains at least the following content:

Page Mode;

Implicit Reject Circuit Switched;

Implicit Reject Packet Switched;

Message Reference Identifier;

Packet Channel Description;

Mobile Allocation, wherein one bit indicates that no mobile allocation is included in the immediate assignment message; and

Frame Number Information Length; and

for each addressed mobile station at least the following content;

Frame Number Information;

Random Bits; and

Mobile Station Identifier Discriminator.

29. The mobile station of claim 11, wherein the immediate assignment message is configured to address a maximum of six mobile stations and contains at least the following content:

Page Mode;

Implicit Reject Circuit Switched;

Implicit Reject Packet Switched;

Message Reference Identifier;

Packet Channel Description;

Mobile Allocation, wherein multiple bits indicate the mobile allocation; and

Frame Number Information Length; and

for each addressed mobile station at least the following content;

Frame Number Information;

Random Bits; and

Mobile Station Identifier Discriminator.

13. A method implemented by a mobile station which interacts with a base station subsystem to perform a procedure to increase an Access Grant Channel (AGCH) capacity by minimizing an amount of mobile station specific information carried within an immediate assignment message, the method comprising:

receiving system information (SI) from the base station subsystem, where the SI comprises at least an indicator which indicates to the mobile station that the BSS is configured to perform the procedure;

after receiving the SI, sending an access request to the base station subsystem, where the access request is sent when the mobile station is requesting to establish an uplink Temporary Block Flow (TBF) that is triggered by a small data transmission (SDT) or an instant message transmission (IMT);

in response to sending the access request, receiving an immediate assignment message on the AGCH from the base station substation, where the immediate assignment message comprises at least a portion of static radio parameters and at least a portion of dynamic radio parameters;

receiving a remaining portion of the dynamic radio parameters in a message on a Packet Associated Control Channel (PACCH) from the base station subsystem; and

using the at least a portion of static radio parameters, the at least a portion of dynamic radio parameters, and the remaining portion of the dynamic radio parameters when establishing the uplink TBF to transmit the SDT or IMT.

14. The method of claim 13, further comprising:

receiving additional static radio parameters in a message on a Packet Associated Control Channel (PACCH).

30. The method of claim 13, wherein the SI further comprises mobile allocation information, and the immediate assignment message has a bit to indicate that no mobile allocation information is included within the immediate assignment message.

31. The method of claim 13, wherein each of the at least one access request comprises:

bits corresponding to a one phase access for an optimized system access procedure request;

bits corresponding to signalling for the optimized system access procedure request;

bits corresponding to a single block packet access for the optimized system access procedure request; and

bits corresponding to a two phase access for the optimized system access procedure request.

32. The method of claim 13, wherein the immediate assignment message and the message on the PACCH both comprise a message reference identification which enables the mobile station to precisely associate the received message on the PACCH to the received immediate assignment message.

33. The method of claim 13, wherein the immediate assignment message is configured to address a maximum of eight mobile stations and contains at least the following content:

Page Mode;

Implicit Reject Circuit Switched;

Implicit Reject Packet Switched;

Message Reference Identifier;

Packet Channel Description;

Mobile Allocation, wherein one bit indicates that no mobile allocation is included in the immediate assignment message; and

Frame Number Information Length; and

for each addressed mobile station at least the following content;

Frame Number Information;

Random Bits; and

Mobile Station Identifier Discriminator.

34. The method of claim 13, wherein the immediate assignment message is configured to address a maximum of six mobile stations and contains at least the following content:

Page Mode;

Implicit Reject Circuit Switched;

Implicit Reject Packet Switched;

Message Reference Identifier;

Packet Channel Description;

Mobile Allocation, wherein multiple bits indicate the mobile allocation; and

Frame Number Information Length; and
